The Cobblepot Adventures? Penguin’s Playhouse? There’s something cooking at HBO – and Colin Farrell’s Penguin could be getting his own spin-off.

What would Batman be without his famous rogues gallery? After the better part of a century, numerous Batman villains could each hold their own series, and it looks like HBO knows it. The streaming service is in early-stages scripting for a Penguin spin-off.

Colin Farrell is set to play the notorious Oswald Cobblepot. Audiences have already got a peek at the nearly unrecognizable actor in the trailer for the upcoming film, though Farrell has said he’s only in a few scenes.

Variety reports that the potential series would aim to tell the tale of Oswald’s ascension to power. It will be produced by the same team behind The Batman, Dylan Clark and Matt Reeves.

Penguins of the Past

The Penguin has already has several memorable appearances in Batman movies and shows over the years. Burgess Meredith played the character in the classic Adam West TV series, bringing the character from the page to the screen.

Later, Danny DeVito would portray a creature-feature version of the character, scaring the pants off of any kid who saw the movie in theaters. DeVito will also be writing a Penguin comic book issue for the 80th anniversary of the character in Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant #1 this November.

Years later, Robin Lord Taylor would portray the character in the series Gotham. Though many things about the show were over-the-top, Taylor’s iteration of the character was praised. He seemed to capture the odd charisma and intelligence of the character.

DC seems to have warmed up the big-screen hero machine, and we’re here for it. After multiple delays, The Batman will hit theaters in March of 2022. If Farrell comes on to play the classic villain, it will be second series to spin off from the movie. HBO is also producing a drama about the GCPD.

What do you think of the Penguin in the upcoming The Batman?
