D&D: Co-Creators Of Dragonlance, Tracy And Laura Hickman, Announce A New Campaign World
Tracy and Laura Hickman, best known for Dragonlance and Ravenloft in the old TSR days, have announced a new 5th Edition setting.
A new 5th Edition D&D setting has recently been announced from some of the co-creators of Dragonlance and Ravenloft, Tracy and Laura Hickman. This new setting, Skyraiders of Abarax, looks like it promises airships, magic, and a revamped steampunk aesthetic that’s less tacked on clockworks, and more brown and bronze and “regimental” looking.
Skyraiders of Abarax marks the first foray into 5th Edition campaign settings for the Hickmans, but by no means are the team strangers to creating interesting campaign worlds. The duo got their start in TSR during the glory days of 1st-into-2nd Edition and brought with them imaginative settings and themes that pushed the boundaries of what an RPG campaign could look like. Thanks to modules like the original Dragonlance and Castle Ravenloft, we have a much richer understanding of what it means to have a big villain in an RPG scenario. If you’ve played through a narrative-heavy adventure, you owe a lot to that early work they laid out in their first forays.
Now they look to bring that same inventiveness to 5th Edition with the Skyraiders of Abarax. Precious little is known about the setting other than you’ll be playing sky pirates (or skyraiders if you prefer) on airships and that in addition to the usual fantasy array of humans, elves, dragonborn, halflings, and so on, you can also play as pantherfolk. There’s one right up there on the main art piece.
A few other pieces have been making the rounds on various social media, from Twitter to Facebook and back again. And on each piece of artwork you get more snippets that paint a picture of the world the Hickmans are building.
Long centuries past the aeroships imperial, enforcers of our exile silently vanished from the skies
Forsaken on the prison isle, our ancestors broke from their chains and keepers to forge survival from their ruined past
Yet our hearts still are fixed upon that empty horizon, beyond a treacherous sea, yearning for lands of which we’ve only dreamed.
To the winds, buccaneers! To the storm! Skyraiders fly! On dragon’s Sylph to find our lost way back to that mythic place called home.
