Our first look at the team is here!

Before Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad, the DCEU’s first officially fun movie was Shazam! Billy Batson’s introduction to the wizard Shazam scores him some pretty sweet magical powers– and 2023 seems like such a long time to wait for the Shazam family sequel. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming film.

The sequel to the fan-favorite was scheduled for release in April 2022 but was delayed due to COVID-19. Director David F. Sandberg has returned for the sequel and has been dropping tidbits on Twitter for a while now.

He released a teaser tweet showing the hero’s new costume design. The lightning bolt looks smaller and sleeker, and this costume seems more streamlined with other DCEU hero suits.

The original Shazam family cast is returning, although Grace Fulton will return to play both Mary Bromfield and Mary Marvel. Between suiting up as her “child” self (who is presumably off at college now) and Billy’s costume change, it could imply that the kids have control of their superhero appearance.

In the early aughts of the sequel, fans crossed their fingers for a Black Adam appearance. This ‘vs’ became even more exciting when it was announced that Dwayne Johnson’s portrayal of the anti-hero would grace the big screen before Shazam 2.

But the second film’s villains have been cast, and it appears the characters will be new additions to the DC universe. In this story, Billy and his siblings will face off with the daughters of Atlas. This includes Hespera, to be played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, and Rachel Zegler as an unknown sister.

The title of the film indicates these gods might have a bone to pick with the teenaged superhero. While the first film was certainly an origin story, Billy & Co. definitely have a lot to learn about the origin of their powers. The introduction of magical adversaries gives us an opportunity to explore a form of magic in the DCEU.

Even with the film’s Atlanta production staying well under wraps, the first film’s post-credit scenes will play into future installments of Shazam! With Billy’s sleek new upgrade, fans are wondering if that means the hero will make an appearance alongside one of his Justice League contemporaries.

But the real loose string that needs tying is the matter of Dr. Sivana and Mister Mind. During the first post-credits scene, Sivana tries in vain to regain his powers until he’s interrupted by a small, worm-like creature with a voice box on it. He introduces the 7 realms, which could be a future key to the introduction of Black Adam.

Mark Strong has not been confirmed for the second Shazam! film, and it’s unlikely that Mister Mind will appear and he will not. If anything, this gives me hope in the DCEU’s commitment to giving me more hilarious Shazam family movies.

The screening still seems pretty far off– especially after the Eternal Year that was 2020. But with movies like Venom 2 moving premiere dates forward, there’s hope for the Marvel family to hit theaters a little earlier than anticipated. Either way, fans of the funnier side of the DCEU eagerly await the sequel to Shazam!
