Agatha Harkness: Marvel May Give Magical Troublemaker Spinoff Series
Kathryn Hahn’s fan-favorite sorceress could be the star of her own MCU Agatha Harkness spinoff series.
WandaVision was a big hit for Marvel’s out-of-the-box phase 4 series lineup. Sure, the nostalgic classic TV bits and lead characters were charming. But the season’s villain was the one we loved all along.

Yesterday, Variety reported the likelihood that Agatha Harkness will be the star of her own upcoming MCU series. At the beginning of the year, Kathryn Hahn charmed WandVision audiences with her portrayal of a cheeky, meddling neighbor. But as the season came to an end, Agatha revealed her own malicious intentions– and the full scope of Wanda’s powers.
Who is Agatha Harkness?
Marvel’s Phase 4 is really leaning into the universe’s magic users. Agatha Harkness may not be the most well-known name from the comics, but she’s got ties to several super teams and heroes, including fellow magical heavyweights Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch.
Similar to her backstory in WandaVision, Agatha is a centuries-old witch who uses magic to drastically slow her aging process. She was the leader of a group of Salem witches in the 17th century, and she escapes persecution with a group of her witches. The group forms a city called New Salem, and Agatha is their leader for a time.
Auntie Agatha serves as a mentor to mutants and magic users in the comic book universe. One of her closest relationships happens to be with Wanda, and Agatha often works to help the incredibly powerful sorceress learn to control her powers. Agatha has teamed up with big-time super-teams like the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. She’s so powerful, she’s even able to establish contact with the Watcher.
Will Agatha be a Villain in the MCU?
Agatha’s villainous reveal was arguably the greatest moment of WandaVision. “It was Agatha all along” quickly became the show’s unofficial tagline, and fans have been humming that little ditty since the sorceress started openly wielding her dark realm magic on screen.

But as the MCU branches outward, the line between ‘enemy’ and ‘ally’ is getting blurry. Our favorite big-time Phase 1 villain, Loki, starred in his own series a few months after the WandaVision finale. The character’s redemption arc literally blew the lid off the multiverse.
Meanwhile, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings gave us a very sympathetic villain in a Marvel origin story. And the animated series What If…? showed us how characters’ motivations can change based on one change in their circumstances.
With her comic book backstory and Marvel’s penchant for churning out lovable antiheroes, Agatha’s role in the MCU could still shake out for the better. Given a story of her own and upcoming rumors about the Scarlet Witch’s role in The Multiverse of Madness, fans aren’t quite ready to write Agatha off as a big MCU baddie.

Waiting for the Witch
Hanh’s reps and the higher powers at Marvel have yet to confirm whether the witch will be starring her own series. If the show is confirmed, audiences may have to wait as early as 2023 for a premiere.
Marvel has a new series slated for the end of this year. Hawkeye will hit Disney+ on November 24th. Following that in 2022 are Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The studio has also confirmed I am Groot, Ironheart, and Armor Wars, which will likely premiere in 2023.
Agatha stans may be understandably disappointed by the long wait for her tale. But the upcoming events of Far from Home and other multiversal stories will certainly have an impact on our girl’s arc. And the MCU will undoubtedly need all of the magic users it can get.
