Warhammer 40K: This Week’s Meta Hotness – The Megatrakk Scrapjets
Let’s take a look at a really scrappy unit that’s been tearing things up in Warhammer 40K, the Megatrakk Scrapjet.
In the ever-shifting meta of 40K armies rise and fall. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about armies that are hot or not and a lot less time looking at units that are running the show. That changes today as we’re taking a look at one of the hottest units currently running around the tabletop: the Megatrakk Scrapjet!
The Unit
Megatrakk Scrapjets are an Ork light vehicle/buggy unit. These Speed Freaks zip around the table covered in weapons and crew. The Scrapget, is covered in some heavier guns for a light vehihcle and provides a lot of fire power. This ramshackle vehicle is surprisingly effective.
Why They Are Good
Light vehicles are having a bit of a moment right now in 40K. As one itself, the Megatrakk has been able to capitalize on this. With T6 and 9 wounds the Megatrakk is a light, but very annoying vehicle, that can rush around causing a lot of problems. Ramshackle adds to this, giving it an annoying amount of survivability and making it very resistant to mid-range anti-tank firepower. You need to dedicate real shooting to kill this thing off, and it’s not worth all that much.
On top of being annoying, the Megatrakk puts out a lot of firepower, with just a ton of shots. For a current 90 pts, this unit can get up to 30 shots a model, which is a super high rate of firepower. Sure 20 of those shots are “only” big shoota shots and not the most devastating, but even they are solid anti-horde shots and add up. More impressive is the other up to 10 shots which is all S8 AP-2 and D3. These are excellent stats for anything from killing MEQ to light and even some heavy vehicles. At only S8, and with bad BS they aren’t going to be super reliable at hurting heavy tanks, but they will go through other light ones with easy, and can hurt the heavies.
With this spread of firepower you’ve got an annoying to kill unit that can target both light hordes and heavy units, making it very versatile. It’s not horrible in combat either, with a decent weapons and getting to deal some mortal wounds. Charging wouldn’t be your first options, but it can finish off wounded prey. While its main gun can’t get a +1 to hit, with two others getting it, it’s a little more accurate then it seems at first. Overall this super cheap unit can put out some ranged hurt and is super annoying to get rid of.
Saying a unit is hot is all well and good but let’s take a look at how players are using it. A lot of Ork lists have been running Scrapjets and have done well at recent events recently. One list that shows off the use of Scrapjets is Andrew Penn’s list he ran to take 1st place at the recent Adelaide GT. (via 40kstats.com)

Using the Unit
Andrew’s list makes use of a total of 6 Megatrakk’s in 3 units of two. This makes great use of the units low cost and being able to take multiple in a single unit. This list overall is just a ton of light vehicles meant to run around and annoy you, while shooting you up. A total of 16 vehicles makes for a hard list to whittle down. The Megetakk’s give the list some great anti-tank firepower, as well as just a ton of anti light infantry shots. Run as Freebooter’s you can save them for last then unleash their heavy weaponry with a nice +1 to hit.
