Warhammer Underworlds: New Roadmap Updates – More Warbands On The Way
In a surprise to (hopefully) no one, Games Workshop is bringing more warbands to Warhammer Underworlds – and now we have some timelines for when to expect them.
Warhammer Underworlds: Harrowdeep is dropping this weekend. We’re looking forward to the new boxed set and all the new goodies inside. But we have also been wondering what’s next for the arena skirmish game and what does GW have planned. Well, today, those questions have been answered – but now we’ve got a new set of questions. Let’s check out that roadmap.
“Longtime Warhammer Underworlds players may notice that this is a little different from previous seasons. Going forward, there will be two core sets released each year – each including an all-new pair of warbands, fresh board designs, universal cards, and more.”
Alright – there are some things to digest in this image. In Q1, we are looking at a new Warband and a new Rivals Deck. We were hoping to see more decks for the Rivals format – perhaps GW is wanting to keep the card pool down number wise. As for the new Warband…well we’ve got an interesting icon to look at there. It sure looked like it could be pirate themed which totally fits with the fact that Harrowdeep has to do with battling under the sea. Which warband could that be!?
In Q2 of 2022, we’ve got another new Warband along with another new Core Set which ALSO includes 2 more Warbands. So for the first half of the year, we’re getting a total of 4 new warbands. Good to know. Also, we’ve got a lightning-themed warband on the way. Gee, I wonder what that could be…
In anycase, the move to two Core Sets is interesting. Typically, GW uses those to kick off a season. Occasionally, they are just refreshers/expansions vs a new seasonal story launch. Dreadfane comes to mind. Sure, it wasn’t a “full” core set but it checked a lot of the same boxes.
The new Road Map does seem to cut down on a the number of warbands coming out this season – but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Don’t get me wrong – I want more new, cool models, too, but I also understand that Warhammer Underworlds is getting larger and larger with each one that comes out. Add in all the cards per Warband, the new Universal and Grand Alliance Cards, and the new Rivals Deck(s) and…well, you get the idea.
When you start mixing in the card/deck building aspect, the deeper you get with the card pool, the harder it can be for new players to jump in. That’s actually one advantage of the Rivals Deck format for play – new players don’t need all the cards to get started. That said, the Championship card pool is getting larger and larger. I’m wondering if GW is noticing and planning to cut either cards or Warbands from the more competitive Champion format.
Next Warband Teaser
GW also teased a mini from the next warband on deck. See if you can figure out what the Warband’s theme is with the clues we’ve gotten.
“We’ve seen fighters from most of the well-known factions from Warhammer Age of Sigmar, so the design team plans to explore some of the stranger corners of the Mortal Realms when it comes to future warbands. It’s time to get a little weird. Don’t believe us? Take a look at this, our first glimpse of the next warband to come after Harrowdeep.”
The Design Team is getting weird, huh? This could be fun! What do you think this Warband is going to be? And yes – that is a Parrot!
