Watch a Blacksmith Turn a Rusty, Old Anvil into Thor’s Hammer
No materials are wasted at the Random Hands studio – check out this amazing transformation that turns scrap metal into Thor’s hammer.
What do you do with an anvil when it’s old and unusable for its intended task? Random Hands chose to turn an 40lb rusted anvil he had lying around his shop into Mjölnir, Thor’s mighty hammer. The shop specializes in knives, swords, and creative restoration projects. He uses a mix of heavy machinery and skilled hand work for the transformation of the chunk of metal.
A lot of the work is cutting the anvil down to the right base shape and get all of the debris off it, which takes a specialized saw and heavy duty grinder to accomplish. Damage those processes didn’t take care of are filled using some interesting chemical reactions and a bandaid. The lace detail on the details are created with laser cut inlays that are welded in place. He uses a cold blueing process after sanding the hammer to give it a slightly aged, less shiny and chrome look. The handle is a combination of lathed steel and wood, and is finished off with a hand-cut leather strap.
The whole process is really interesting to watch from a crafting and scientific standpoint.
The result isn’t super ornate, but it’s still beautiful – especially when you consider where it started. Make sure you check out the Random Hands YT channel for more projects like this gorgeous axe made from an old lift hook and this restoration of a super rusted cleaver.
