Age of Sigmar: New ‘Maggotkin’ Vanguard Box Contents And Pricing Breakdown
The Nurgle Maggotkin are getting a new style of starter box. Let’s take a look at the contents and figure out what’s going on inside!
During a previous Warhammer Preview we learned that the Maggotkin were up next for a Battletome. We also learned that alongside the Holiday Box bundles that the Maggotkin were also getting a new style of army box called a “Vanguard” box. This was compared by GW to a 40k “Combat Patrol” box.
Today, we’re going to dive into the contents and compare this box to the old Start Collecting! box which is still currently available (if you want to snag it before it gets completely replaced).
Maggotkin of Nurgle Vanguard Contents
From what we can gather from the cover, we see the following units:
5x Putrid Blightkings – $57
2x Pusgoyle Blightlords – $65
10x Plaguebearers of Nurgle – $36
1x Spoilpox Scrivener – $34
That brings us to a total MSRP of $192 if you purchased each unit individually.
Now, funnily enough, this box is almost the same as the Start Collecting! Box but it’s got a few key changes. Comparatively, GW swapped out the Lord of Blights ($30) for Spoilpox Scrivener and then added in 10 Plaguebearers. If you wanted to run a couple units of Putrid Blightkings and Pusgoyle Blightlords, then picking up the Start Collecting! box right now seems like a really good deal. Then snag a Vanguard afterwards, and you’re set for a bit.
Vanguard Price Point?
Now, also funnily enough, if you take the Start Collecting Price Point, and swap the character’s prices out (which is a $4 addition) and then add the cost of Plague Bearers ($36) to the box it comes to $135. Which is just shy of the Combat Patrol Pricing of $140. Considering the Maggotkin of Nurgle Start Collecting! box came out in 2019, it’s not hard to imagine GW reboxing these kits into the new Vanguard box and increasing the price by $5 to keep them inline with the Combat Patrols. That’s assuming they want to stick to that price point and we see no reason they wouldn’t.
It’s still a big discount compared to buying everything individually. And again, if you’re interested in those models, you should PROBABLY snag a Start Collecting! Maggotkin box ASAP. Heck, you could throw in a box of Plaguebearers and you’re still getting a great deal and it’s comparable to the Vanguard box that’s coming. Just tossing that out there.
Or wait for the new Battletome to drop and figure out what you want to play then…
If you like the models then the Vanguard box looks like a solid deal.
