Classic VHS Game ‘Atmosfear’ Getting 30th Anniversary Edition
Some things are timeless. VHS-games were not. But the Atmosfear 30th Anniversary Edition proves a few of these games are going strong.
Back in the ’90s, board games were reaching a resurgence in popularity. Designers were trying all sorts of weird new gimmicks. Some became iconic games while some probably helped develop some fetishes later in life. And some were memes before we knew what that meant.
But one of the most interesting gimmicks was the VHS Board Game genre, which was launched by Atmosfear. You may have known it as Nightmare, depending on your region, but Atmosfear is an objectively better name.
Some time ago, we took a closer look at how Atmosfear plays, and I’ll be the first to admit I was a little harsh. For some reason, the last 20 months or so have really changed my perspective on things. This is not the case with every VHS Board Game though, as some nightmareish truths are universal.
In honor of the 30th anniversary, Atmosfear is getting a new coat of paint. This modernized version won’t require a VHS player. Instead it has the video streaming online, and has a few extra goodies launched on their Kickstarter page.
The rewards vary from a metal coin to show your support to the standard game or with a few bonus extras like unique dice, or a graphic novel titled “The Lore of the Other Side”.
In an age of app-assisted board games, I can absolutely see this fitting in well with the modern landscape. Plus, the campy horror aesthetic is just great.
In terms of gameplay, don’t expect anything groundbreaking. But if you’re looking for a fun and spooOOooky time, Atmosfear will be just that.
