Thanks to Disney+ Day, Marvel fans got a Moon Knight teaser trailer that shows Oscar Isaac as the vigilante-in-white.

On Friday, the MCU released the first look at the highly-anticipated new Moon Knight series. Like all teasers, the clip was a quick series of flashes in less than 30 seconds. Short though it was, the Moon Knight teaser trailer gave us plenty of exciting details about the upcoming show.

Who is Moon Knight?

Marc Spector is an ex-marine turned mercenary who was saved from death by the Egyptian god Khonshu. In exchange for his life, the moon god demanded that Marc serve as the protector of those who travel by night.

What makes Marc’s character so unique is his DID diagnosis. Dissociative Identity Disorder (or DID) was formerly known as multiple personality disorder. It’s yet unknown how the show’s imagining of Khonsu will interact with Marc’s DID, but the disorder is often rooted in severe childhood trauma.

There is no shortage of misrepresentations of DID in media. But Marvel has shown great empathy with other mental health subjects like PTSD. And as Phase 4 pushes the boundaries of the vanilla MCU formula, we’re hoping that the show offers an informed and empathetic look at the disorder.

Things We Saw in The Moon Knight Teaser

Several of the teaser’s frames feature Marc running around a museum full of Egyptian artifacts. These scenes feature a lot of fascinating bits in the background. In the first, mirrors in the museum holds his reflection.

This could be a reference to his fractured personality. In the mirror, here are only two other reflections. In the comics, Marc also has two other popular personalities: billionaire playboy Steven Grant and cab driver Jake Lockley.

In another museum scene, Marc appears to be hiding at the foot of a large statue. Is this a statue of Khonshu? And what’s that dark and scary shadow with ominous glowing eyes lurking in the background?

The Moon Knight teaser also revealed a fully-caped Moon Knight delivering an intense beating to someone, but we never actually see the person. This makes us wonder if there’s a person there at all.

And we also join Marc just as he comes to consciousness surrounded by a pile of beaten people. Memory loss and blackouts are sure to play a role in his portrayal of DID.

And while the trailer didn’t give us a full costume reveal, we did get a detailed look at the gloved arm, cape, and hood.

Is Moon Knight Connected to The Eternals?

Spoilers ahead for ‘The Eternals’.

Based on scenes from the Moon Knight teaser, it looks like Marc will actually be fighting in London, not New York City. This could explain why one of Marc’s personalities speaks in a British accent in the teaser trailer.

But this is an oddly-specific change to make to his story. Unless something important is happening in London. Something to do with Marvel’s supernatural universe, perhaps?

In The Eternals end credits scene, Dane Whitman unboxes the Ebony Blade. It’s all but certain Kit Harrington’s character will take up the helm of the Black Knight. And at the end of the scene, we hear the voice of Mahershala Ali, the MCU’s vampire-human hybrid.

It’s speculated that the two characters will be a part of an MCU team geared toward things that go bump in the night. And Moon Knight might just become a part of this team, which could be the universe’s version of the Midnight Suns.

Casting & Production

Moon Knight will be a 6 episode series premiering in 2022 on Disney+. The series is produced and directed by Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab. Diab spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the mood of the series:

“My movies are hard, serious and about big topics, and I feel strongly that Moon Knight is going to be like that — it’s going to be entertainment but also heavy. At the same time, we’re being so creative with the jokes and with the action. As I keep saying to my wife: I can’t believe I’m funny in another language!”

In addition to Oscar Isaacs in the lead role, Ethan Hawke was cast as a yet unknown villain. Hawke revealed that Isaacs himself recruited him after they bumped into each other in their Brooklyn neighborhood.

Gaspard Ulliel has also been cast as the thief known as Midnight Man.
