Well let’s see if we can guess how these new armies will end up working.

Welp – it wasn’t a new Horus Heresy or some other kind of “Surprise” codex.  It ended up being GSC vs Custodes in a very weird match up style box set that kinda makes a very hard sell on why these two armies would be bitter enemies.  From the little video it sounds like the GSC  are attacking Terra?  You’d think going after the main stronghold of “humanity” in this universe wouldn’t be the best idea.  But still – it gives people a box set they can spend on before the Xmas season of deals, steals, and plastic crack dreams.

So what is this article about?  Well let’s see if we can guess how these new armies will end up working.

Adeptus Custodes Changes?

From the chatter I have heard it sounds like Custodes are going to get decent tweaks to their strats, being brought into the 9th edition mindset (Core, extra rules if all Custodes, tougher) with what sounds like most likely extra wounds versus any other toughness tricks.  The strats I do think will have a good once over to try and either eliminate some weirdness or just make sure we don’t have some oops broken FW combo.  Speaking of Forge World – there most likely won’t have any updated data sheets as while it would be sweet to have it all in one place I just don’t see a lot of effort put in updating their rules. Will this mean a whole season of seeing Volkite like options whenever you see the golden fan boyz of the emperor?  Who knows – but I am expecting the Telemon to get enough of a hit that one will be used versus 2-3 and will continue to see the Flash Gordon jump Birdman and the cheap troop choice – that is if  the Sisters of Silence don’t get moved to a troop option.

This means most likely the army will play the same with a few of the outlier options nerfed and most likely something GW wants to sell more of pushed a bit more (Make Bikes Good Aroooo!!!).  I bet Trajan gets an ole Chapter Master like improvement and we might see those Captains limited to one per Detachment.  The new Sword character seems interesting but unless he does some kind of sweet Aura or some insane number of attacks I don’t expect to see him that much.  The army needs more overlapping powers that help boost them up as they are missing Psychics, Litanies, and other fun Auras.  Of course – we could see a lot of this show up as neat Warlord traits or other relics so who knows.

But I am pretty sure will see an extra wound and extra attacks as that seems to be the common thing in a lot of these updates.  Plus – one of the terminators might get some kind of cool sweep attack and maybe will see those power daggers get a bit more interesting.

Genestealer Cult Changes?

Jumping from that the biggest shift in how they play will most likely be the Genestealer Cult.  The whole blip thing just never worked right with either being too powerful or just not working at all.  This leaves me to think will see a lot more “deep strike” but closer set of rules that will let the army be easier to play with.  Removing some of the weird random nature will be helpful and just making stuff work.  Having armies that fully deep strike starts to move into the territory of being too powerful if left unchecked so will just have to see.

The other weird thing is this book going to “gel” with Nids and Astra Militarum?  As one of the only non Chaos armies that can intermix and still be friends the GSC could end up being a weird departure from other 9th books.  Are they just going to add in all the AM options in the book itself so it isn’t a weird shift?  Are they going to limit what AM stuff you can take into the detachment like all the other Cultists, Poxwalkers, and Tzaangors?  Does this really matter that much?

I really hope they go hog wild into the whole “blow up” terrain sort of thing.  Stuff like throwing mortal wounds out to buildings not within the players deployment zone would be neat.  Heck if they could get to an objective and blow it up for points that would be pretty sweet too – removing the threat of an opponent taking it and getting some points in the process.  This would reverse all those Corruption or Purification options we see in other armies. It is a hard thing to work out because as a whole the army is expensive to purchase, a lot to paint, and just kind of weird in their interaction.

Are you excited about this boxed set?  Do you like these “fight” boxes?  What if the next one was Tau vs Nids in the beginning of the year?  And where the heck is my Chaos stuff right?  I kept hearing chatter about World Eaters and with that little tidbit in the last Campaign book are we finally going to see Angron hit the table top all mad?

For the Emperor!
