League of Super-Pets kicks the gritty DC formula to the curb and replaces it with lighthearted jokes and cute animals.

This summer, DC announced a new animated movie inspired by all of the animal companions and pets in the DC universe. It stars Superman’s dog Krypto and other pets connected to the Justice League.

First Look at Super-Pets

The first super adorable trailer is here. Meet the newest crime-fighting team: Merton, PB, Krypto, Chip, and Ace. I’m slightly disappointed that there’s no Bat-Cow, Streaky, or Flexi the Plastic-Bird.

These critters do look pretty dang cute, though.

You can’t really avoid comparisons to the The Secret Life of Pets movies, but this fully grounded in the DC universe. The pets come up against the same big bads that the super heroes fight.

I think it’ll be a great adventure for young fans, who haven’t gotten something on the big screen that’s tailored for them. My grown-up self will be going to see it, too.

DC League of Super-Pets Synopsis

In “DC League of Super-Pets,” Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack—Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle and Chip the squirrel—to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the superheroes.

Dwayne Johnson stars as the voice of Krypto the Super-Dog. He’s joined by John Krasinski as Super-Man. Kevin Hart will voice Batman’s dog Ace, and Vanessa Bayer as PB, Wonder Woman’s potbellied pig.

Natasha Lyonne also stars as Merton (Flash’s turtle) and Diego Luna will play Chip, the Green Lantern’s squirrel friend. Marc Maron will voice Lex Luthor.

Jameela Jamil, Thomas Middleditch, Ben Schwartz, Kate McKinnon, and Keanu Reeves are on the cast list in undisclosed roles.

‘DC League of Super-Pets’ hits theaters on May 20, 2022.
