Tons of top-quality video games have come in out in the last year, but these are our favorite games of 2021.

This year has somehow gone by in a flash and lasted an entire decade. Luckily, there have been tons of quality games coming out this year to distract us from… you know… everything. These are some of our favorites to come out in the last twelve months.

Resident Evil Village

via Capcom

I can’t believe was a 2021 game, but it was also perhaps one of the most iconic games of 2021. Few games bring everyone together quite like all of our universal love for Lady Dimitrescu. And I guess it was also a big-budget, survival horror game of the highest caliber. The developers threw everything they had and the kitchen sink into Resident Evil Village and it shows. If you’re a fan of the horror genre- and maybe even if you’re not- this is a supremely enjoyable game.

It Takes Two

via EA

It Takes Two embraces co-op gameplay for a weirdly sweet game that has been designed from the ground up to be played cooperatively. You play as May and/or Cody, a couple thiiis close to separating until their daughter makes a wish to keep them together and turns them into small plush dolls. With a friend, you solve pint-sized puzzles that represent the core issue with their relationship and hopefully don’t destroy your own while you’re at it. Between neat art and a very unique take on the co-op game style, It Takes Two deserves more than a second look.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

via Square Enix

I’m honestly surprised by how great this game is. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as a team have enjoyed some surprising popularity since their cinematic debut to the MCU, but games that tie back into larger IPs can be hit or miss at best. Guardians though is great. Featuring a different version of the team- perhaps from elsewhere in the multiverse- Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy focuses on teamwork despite being a single-player game. It has a solid story and a very solid soundtrack. If you want to love GotG but are over the MCU’s Peter Quill, you’ll love Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Metroid Dread

via Nintendo

If you, like me, enjoy a good side scroller but just can’t find enough of them, Metroid Dread was there to answer all of your prayers this year. With three decades of history to honor, this is a game that had its work cut out for it. Yet Metroid Dread managed to be a new, fresh, scary, and most of all fun game that walked the line between classic and new.

Deathloop

via Bethesda

Even if you’re a fan of the time loop trope, it can be hard to work it into a game without getting quickly repetitive and boring. And so how enjoyable and brilliant Deathloop is is a true achievement in video game writing and design. Despite living the same day over and over, this is a game that will keep you guessing until the very end and it’s fun to play and visually stunning.

What was your favorite video game of the year? Did any of your favorites make our best-of list? What games are you looking forward to in 2022? Let us know in the comments!
