‘The Expanse’ Season 6 Episode 2– “Azure Dragon” Breakdown
There are plots and plans to go around this week on The Expanse, and everyone is pretty sure they have the upper hand.
If the first episode of The Expanse season 6 felt a bit slow, it’s only because it was laying the groundwork for episode 2. This episode kicks all of the plots this season off at eleven. Everyone has a lot going on with a strong focus on the future, and we’re loving watching it all unfold.
This article contains spoilers for ‘The Expanse’ season 6.
The Expanse Goes Back to Laconia
We only spend a few minutes of the episode back on the mysterious jungle planet. But episode two gives us a little more time here.
The young girl from the first episode rushes a dying bird-like alien back to camp. There, her parents explain that creatures front his planet can’t eat food that humans can and visa versa. They have of completely differently evolving ecosystems and chemicals.
While the girls is grappling with this, her parents have a hushed conversation about what’s been built in orbit. The entire camp has to attend a meeting about it.
Despite Laconia being an incredibly interesting place that we have numerous questions about, we don’t spend much time here at all. We’re left with even more questions than before.
Filip’s Punishment
Filip starts this episode in a belter prison cell. He’s there because he lost his cool and shot one of his crew-mates and friends in the first episode.
Instead of seeing any real consequence for his actions, Marco collects him. He makes up a story about Filip defending himself from an attack, calls Filip an embarrassment, and gets back to his day-to-day terrorisms.
Filip obviously feels bad. He arranges to have something sent to his former friend’s family with a message claiming that he’d died a hero. These scenes aren’t exactly exciting, but it’s fascinating to watch Filip, and by extension Marco’s inner circle, come undone.
The Golden Bough
Drummer is trying to find a safe place for Michio to be until the war is over. He decides Walker of The Golden Bough would be a perfect candidate. Except he’s technically flying under Marco…
Luckily for everyone involved, Walker seems to have no allegiance to The Free Navy outside of survival. But he does know where all of their supply depots are.
Drummer turns this meeting into an intelligence collection. The two seem to be forming a plan for rebellion against Marco and The Free Navy. Surely we’ll get to watch unfold in future episodes.
The Azure Dragon
Bobbie meets up with the Rocinante with a brand new, top-secret mission from Chrisjen. They’re to find the rockhopper The Azure Dragon and capture it for data instead of destroying it.
Tensions are a bit high, but it’s no secret that this group works well together. Unfortunately the mission doesn’t go exactly to plan.
The Azure Dragon spots the Roci and bolts. Holden and Bobbie argue over whether the mission is scrubbed or not. Meanwhile, Naomi suffers from paralyzing PTSD and can’t go into space to complete her part of the mission.
This results in Clarissa taking over for her. It’s a nail-biting few scenes that end in a successful mission. Holden accepts Clarissa as a member of the crew for the first time.
When Marco learns of the Azure Dragon’s capture, he knows that the Roci will soon be able to locate all of the rocks not yet thrown at Earth. But he’s also not remotely worried about this– he seems to have a plan.
