Warhammer 40K: Black Library’s New Celebration Models Are Bringing Beakies Back
Black Library’s big celebration revealed a host of new books–and two new Space Marine Heroes, one of whom is bringing back the beak.
We all agree that the best, and in many ways, the only true helmet for a Space Marine is a beaked helmet. Sure, big intimidating masks might be good enough for the punters in the Adeptus Astartes, but the beaky boys are the best. That beak is all that stands between humanity and being overrun by a galaxy filled with otherworldly horrors.
Which is why we’re excited that Black Library’s new celebration miniatures bring back that glorious beak. At least on one of the miniatures. Check out Fafnir Rann and Dominion Zephon.
These two heroes are at the heart of many a tale found in the Horus Heresy. First up, here’s Dominion Zephon:
Known as the Bringer of Sorrow, Dominion’s story is a tragic one. He was sent to the Crusader Host after the bioinics replacing his lower arms and legs couldn’t keep functioning at an efficient fighting level.
He was one of the few in the Crusader Host to be afforded a small measure of freedom–in this case, he was allowed to continue his duty marking the names of the dead. Dominion Zephon, though, had a hero’s heart. And though his body rejected the augmetics and he could no longer fight or play music, he was called upon by the Custodian Ciocletian Coros to help with reinforcement during the war within the Webway.
Zephon spent much time in the Imperial Palace after that, where he met Arkhan Land himself, who worked with Dominion to implant a fragment of an AI from the Dark Age of Technology to work with his body to accept the new limbs.
Zephon returned to frontline service and displayed incredible valor during the defense of Gorgon Bar and it’s not hard to see why, with a beaked helmet, who could expect anything less? Now, on to Fafnir Rann:
Fafnir’s story just goes to show what destiny can do to a man. Fafnir Rann was found by a tribe known as the Rann, who raised him to believe he would one day rise up against the House of Dorn. And then Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the Imperial fists showed up and made everything better.
Fafnir Rann quickly proved to not only be heroic–fighting off Horus’ forces near Pluto–but to be honorable as well. He held the line in charge of the defense of the Lion’s Gate Spaceport, until Abaddon, Kroeger, and Kharn personally led a massive attack to overwhelm him.
Rann also helped defend Gorgon Bar alongside Sanguinius himself, displaying incredible honor by helping a wounded Iron Warrior to his feet before killing him, so that he did not die on his knees.
You might be wondering where Fafnir’s beaked helmet is–it’s in his heart.
What do you think of the new minis?
