A new codex is coming for the T’au, but what new models are they getting? It’s looking relatively light…so far.

Early next year Games Workshop is releasing the new T’au Empire Codex, aside from the rules updates in the codex we were wondering what new models they were getting. And it’s looking a little sparse for now.

New Models Announced

First up we have the new Darkstrider miniature. This character is a special Pathfinder operative and it looking to add some extra tricks to the T’au’s arsenal. But that’s not all they are getting…

Don’t forget about the “new” Pathfinders that showed up in Kill Team Chalnath. Sure, it’s mostly just a new accessory sprue but GW did tease that those bit would have rules to match…eventually.

New Rules, Light On Models?

Games Workshop has been a little light on new models for the the upcoming three codexes. Think about it, the Genestealer Cult and the Adeptus Custodes each got one new model to go with their new codexes:

The Blade Master and Saboteur were the only new models those two factions got.

So, with a new Pathfinder character and a new Pathfinder upgrade sprue, the T’au are technically getting more attention in the model range than the GSC and Custodes. That’s still pretty light on the model count no matter how you look at it. So what gives?

Well, aside from the mess that is the global supply chain right now, we think that GW’s efforts might be focused on something else coming in the future right now. Based on the Advent Engine, it looks like we’re going to be getting some new Aeldari miniatures in the future. The problem is we don’t know exactly how far in the future. After all, we’re still waiting for the new Codexes for both the GSC and Custodes to actually arrive. Plus the T’au are probably after that. We’re three books behind what was already anticipated thanks to delays.

On the Age of Sigmar side, let’s not forget that GW also just cranked out a new miniature range for the Orruk Kruleboyz and also a ton of new Stormcast Eternals as well. That was probably a big resource drain for their production team as well. And we also had the Black Templar refresh hit for 40k which was another big injection of new and updated kits, too. I don’t think GW is tapped out of new models, but I do think this downtime is coinciding with the holidays as well as hiccups with the rest of the supply chain. That’s all speculation on my part — but it’s all very coincidental, ain’t it?!

On the plus side it does look like all three of these new books are at least getting some solid rules updates. We’ll have to wait to see their full potential when we get copies of them in our hands. And at this pace, it’s looking like 2022 is going to have a deluge of new rules to tackle.

Maybe GW has more up their sleeves…or maybe they are waiting to show off a whole lot more from another army.
