Looking to shop for the perfect gift for the Warhammer fan in your life but have no idea where to start? We’re here to help.

It’s the final week before the big one and you’re still looking for gifts – welcome to the holidays. We all do it. But now you’re scrambling around your FLGS and not sure what to buy. It’s okay. You’ve got options. Here’s a few tips that will make you the Warhammer Hero your special someone deserves.

The truth is that shopping for Warhammer gifts can be pretty confusing. There’s LOTS of options. What you do NOT want to do is buy something that who ever is receiving the gift can’t really use. And yes, “it’s the thought that counts” and GW does have a pretty good exchange/return policy – or you can get them what they need and be the shopping rockstar giving out the perfect gifts.

AdamHarry’s Warhammer Holiday Tip Guide

Tip #1 – Ask them. No seriously, just ask them. If you don’t know the difference between a Space Wolf Scout and a Deathwing Terminator you need to just ask them. Don’t ask a friend that plays. Don’t ask the store clerk what would be a good gift for them – just ask the person. They will appreciate you getting them something they want vs a box for an army they used to play 5 years ago. Trust me.

It’s the same box, so it’s the same army, right? WRONG!

Tip #2 – Paint sets with models are kind of a trap. Most of the time, when a paint set includes models, it’s a random number that can’t really be used in the game by themselves. Very rarely are they actually useful. So instead of getting a paint set, look at the colors in the set, and just buy those. Often you’ll end up with more volume of paint as well. It may cost a little more, but you’re getting more paint in the long run and the player won’t get stuck with three random marines they can’t really use in a game.

“Three random Assault Intercessors. Cool.”

Tip #3 – Start Collecting! Boxes are a deal…if they actually need those units. This goes back to Tip #1. Say you find out that your gamer plays Skaven and you see the Start Collecting! Skaven Pestilens Box. It’s a great deal! But they might not need another Plague Furnace or Plagueclaw. That could be due to the fact they are capped out on them in their list. Otherwise it’s kind of overkill. But again, just ask them!

Combat Patrol Boxes are the new, larger, and more expensive versions of Start Collecting! Boxes. Same tip applies.

Tip #4 – Gift Cards are a great option. Okay, you’re the type of person who wants to surprise them with a gift. I get it. Pick-up a Gift Card for them. Boom. I guarantee they will be able to get the perfect thing that they need now. “But Gift Cards are so impersonal.” I mean…I guess? Maybe they are a little generic but no sane Warhammer player is going to be upset that you gave them a gift card to their FLGS to buy more plastic dudesmen. Gift Cards are the perfect fall back plan because they are so generic. Plus, the thing they really want might be out of stock so a Gift Card can allow them to purchase it later. Just go with a Gift Card if you’re completely overwhelmed.

It’s a lot less pressure and they get exactly what they want.

Tip #5 – The Mouldline Remover is a sleeper hit. I know folks might be skeptical – I was at first too. But then I actually used one. I’m never going back to just using a hobby knife for cleaning bits. I’ve got too many cuts and slices on my thumbs cleaning bits from that. The Mouldline Remover is my second favorite tool (after a good set of hobby snips). This is a tool that most hobbyists will skip over for themselves. But once they use one they will keep using it. They might not even know it’s a thing at first. But the thing is metal and will last forever. It’s a good gift and a great investment.

This is the gift that keeps on giving. Just try one.

So there you have it. Those are my Tips on shopping for Warhammer fans. It really does boil down to “Ask Them. Or get them a Gift Card.” Here I made this handy graphic:
