What We Know So Far About Star Wars Eclipse
Star Wars: Eclipse is the next video game coming out of the galaxy far far away, and here’s what we know about it so far.
There were many announcements and trailers revealed during the 2021 Game Awards on December 9th. One of the announcements to have the most immediate buzz was the teaser trailer for Quantic Dream’s upcoming Star Wars: Eclipse.
The trailer and animation were both beautiful but tells us precious little information about the actual gameplay or story. But we’ve collected everything we could find, so let’s piece everything together as best we can and try to see what the game may look like.
Star Wars: Eclipse Theories
Star Wars: Eclipse will be a game that gives the player the opportunity to make real in-game choices with real in-game consequences. This looks like it will include picking which of the possible characters you want to play as, “each with their own morality, personality, motivations, and impact upon each other and the story at large.” Quantic seems to be shying away from their standard playable movie-style game and making Star Wars: Eclipse into a game with the possibility for numerous replays.
This will also be the first game to be set in the era of the High Republic, hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga. Star Wars has been introducing fans to more and more of the High Republic through recent books and comics. It’s still one of the eras of the Galaxy that fewer people know a lot about.
With this still under-explored era, Star Wars: Eclipse will have an original story. A story that will introduce new characters, aliens we’ve never seen, and parts of the outer rim still unknown to us. We can definitely see an unknown alien or two in the trailer, perhaps summoning a potential antagonist through a drumming ritual.
Of course, the High Republic is the golden age of the Jedi. The trailer and website all make it clear that there will be Jedi in this “action-adventure, multiple-character branching narrative game.”
There is a Wait Time, Sadly
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that Star Wars: Eclipse will be coming to a game console near you any time soon. According to speculation from IGN’s Tom Henderson, Quantic Dream is currently struggling to find its team. StarWars.com has also said that the game is still in its early stages of development. A three to four year timeline wouldn’t be terribly surprising at all.
The biggest on the dev side is their internal QD engine, which wasn’t built for an open-world title.
