Vampire Survivors will have you reach serotonin levels you didn’t know were possible in this assault on the senses (in the good way).

Vampire Survivors is the latest hot new indie game making the rounds. It’s remarkably simple but still incredibly engaging and gives perfect amounts of dopamine at just the right times. Not only that, it’s available for $3 on Steam or play it for free on Itch.io.

It’s got a gothic horror center, with tower defense crust, and a dollop of rogue-like on top. The visual aesthetics (and a few mechanics) are very reminiscent of old the old Castlevania games.

There are multiple classes to play as, each with their own skills and abilities. But the goal remains the same: kill everything around you.

Garlic Do Work, Boys

Vampire Survivors certainly appears easy and simple at first. Some bats wistfully drift towards you, floating on the breeze, only to be cut down by the cracking of your whip. And as you kill more of these bats and collect the experience gems they drop, you’ll level up and become even stronger.

You’ll gain new items and abilities, and think yourself immortal. But then you’ll start to notice a shift. There’s kind of a lot of bats now. Also skeletons. No big deal.

Wait, what are these new plant monsters and giant mantis creatures? There’s kind of a lot of them, huh? They’re not dying as quickly as I woul… oh, I’m dead.

The difficulty in Vampire Survivors comes at you quick. But, with a plethora of different weapons with synergies that strengthen them, it’s easy to want to want to start your next round right away to try a different strategy.

Try Santa Water, Dead Breath

Because Vampire Survivors has tons of unlockables, it’s easy to want to keep playing and trying again. When I play, I know I’m being chemically manipulated by the shiny lights and bright colors and the very satisfying pop of picking up experience gems. But absolutely nothing compares to open the treasure boxes.

I won’t spoil the spectacle for you.

If you like games like Enter the Gungeon, or Gradius, or any even other loot-combo rogue-likes like Slay the Spire, you’ll probably also enjoy Vampire Survivors.

Plus, again… it’s free.
