D&D: ‘Tal’Dorei Reborn’– The Five Best Magic Items From ‘Critical Role’s’ New Book
Tal’Dorei Reborn‘s magical items abound– the book is chock full of ’em. It’s enough to make a dragon envious. These are our favorites.
Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn is an absolute treasure trove of magic items. While the new subclasses might be appealing to some players. The one thing that everyone will love is the Magic Items. To me, this is where the book really sings. If you’ve watched an episode of Critical Role, you know that Matt Mercer loves his magic items.
And that love is on display here. Tal’Dorei’s magic items range from simple common items, twenty-three in all. And that’s not counting the powerful Vestiges of Divergence. Here are our favorite magic items from Tal’Dorei.
Cataclysm Bolts
These magical steel crossbow bolts are found in sets of ten. Each bolt thrums with magical power, and when fired, the bolts unleash one of four different magical attacks. Every single one of them is exciting, and usually best when fired in a target-rich environment.
Raven’s Slumber
This is the ultimate in terms of magic item shenanigans. It is a magical crystal that is capable of trapping someone in a pocket dimension. You can either touch someone willingly to spirit them away from wherever you are, to a place where evil cannot touch them.
Or you can make an improvised melee or ranged attack against a creature and if they fail a DC 10 Wisdom Save, they become trapped in the crystal. So already this is pretty great.
Except there’s more. You can also use this crystal to instantly recover an animal companion, tamed beast, or familiar into the crystal when it falls to 0 hit points within 100 feet of the crystal. So what you thought was a phantom zone prison is actually a Pokéball.
Stormrider Boots
Stormrider Boots are some of my favorite magic boots because they give you a very thematic boost for such a short time. For one round, as part of your movement, you can give yourself a fast flying speed, deal lightning damage to any hostile creature you move near (once per turn) and opponents making opportunity attacks on you do so at disadvantage.
So you can charge in and deal a bunch of damage and still have all your attacks. Perfect for a fighter/swashbuckler of any kind.
Earthboard
Reading through Tal’Dorei Reborn you get the feeling that some of these magic items would be right at home in an animated series. And this is one of them.
Earthboards are slabs of rock that are actually skateboards. Rules for these include grabbing sick air if you hit a ramp (and the ability to knock everyone prone if you land), as well as a burrowing speed that allows you to tunnel through earth or solid rock.
It’s an elemental skateboard.
Skysail
Which is why the Skysail is also one of the best of the Tal’Dorei magic items. This magical set of wings are basically a sky surfboard. You can glide through the air at a speed of 60 feet, with the only caveat that you must descend at least 10 feet by the end of each of your turns. However, you can ALSO cast the fly spell on yourself for a minute.
So not only can you glide, you can give yourself 1 minute worth of fly to go up up up before you glide back down. It’s basically Avatar Aang’s windbending staff.
Happy Adventuring!
