Noah Hawley talked a bit about his plans for FX’s Alien series and the future of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror tale.
Back in July, we found out that FX will be producing a new Alien series. Fargo‘s producer Noah Hawley will helm the streaming series. There’s no mention of how the series’ famous xenomorphs will appear. But it looks like artificial intelligence will play into the story in a big way.
“The Company” Won’t Be the Only Company
While speaking to Esquire about his new book Anthem, Hawley gave readers a little insight into the upcoming series. With any installment in the Alien franchise, we can expect “the Company” to do its usual “profit over people” schtick. But it’s unusual to think that only one company would be battling for technological superiority.
Hawley gave fans a few hints about FX’s Aliens series when asked about the show’s progress.
It’s going great. It’s going slowly, unfortunately, given the scale of it. […] Alien is a fascinating story because it’s not just a monster movie; it’s about how we’re trapped between the primordial past and the artificial intelligence of our future[.]
It’s set on Earth of the future. At this moment, I describe that as Edison versus Westinghouse versus Tesla. Someone’s going to monopolize electricity. We just don’t know which one it is. In the movies, we have this Weyland-Yutani Corporation, which is clearly also developing artificial intelligence. But what if there are other companies trying to look at immortality in a different way? With cyborg enhancements or transhuman downloads? Which of those technologies is going to win? It’s ultimately a classic science fiction question: does humanity deserve to survive?”
Corporations battling it out at the expense of the everyday worker? Sounds like a tale with plenty of present-day relevance. And the Alien franchise is no stranger to criticizing the corporate structure.
Up the stakes with a terrifying xenomorph threat and you’ve got yourself a first-class sci-fi horror story. Although it sounds like it’ll be a while before we see it.
What Else Do We Know About FX’s Alien?
Alien sounds like it’s in the pre-pre-production stages. We have no info on a release date, and no casting announcements have been made yet. Still, any word of the upcoming FX Alien series is good news. Our minds and our chest cavities are ready!
