Total War: Warhammer 3 – So THAT’S What The Great Maw Looks Like
The Great Maw appears “on screen” for the first time anywhere in Warhammer in Total War: Warhammer 3. Here’s what it looks like.
We all know that Ogres hear no voice in their ears but the Maw. I’ve only just barely gotten that song out of my head. But what actually is the Great Maw? And if it’s so Great -with-a-capital-G, how come no one’s ever seen it?
Well guzzle down some ale and questionable meat, because we’re taking a look at the Great Maw. Yes, in Total War: Warhammer 3, the Great Maw makes its big debut. But before we get to the reveal, what is it? Lexicanum has some answers for us:
The Great Maw is an all-devouring god at the heart of Ogre religion. Their relationship is not just one of devotion, but also one of fear, for the Great Maw was once responsible for the near destruction of the Ogres.
It begins thousands of years ago in the Mountains of Mourn near Grand Cathay. A great comet streaked across the sky, growing brighter and brighter until one sweltering night the comet crashed right into the Ogre’s homeland:
[The Comet] struck with such force that it could be felt on the other side of the world. All life around it was boiled away in an instant, two thirds of the Ogre population was annihilated as the steppes were liquified under the hammer-blow of this new and terrible god. The raging blinding firestorms that followed the comet’s fall incinerated everything for miles around. Had there been any survivors left to peer into this massive crater left by the comets descent, they would have seen that the comet didn’t just stop when it impacted the earth, but it had burrowed deep into the heart of this world.
Afterwards, the Ogres who survived the impact were force to eat each other in fear and hunger. And feasting gave them strength, thus the Great Maw was born. Given its name by what the oldest Ogres saw in the wake of their great devastation: “a gigantic, gaping crater the size of an inland sea, filled with ridge upon ridge of jagged teeth and rippling, convulsing muscles that stretched down and down into nothingness.”
And boy howdy, does that seem to be the case in Total War: Warhammer 3. As you can see above, the Great Maw is right there. You can find it on the campaign map in Total War: Warhammer 3. If you make a pilgriage you can judge for yourself whether this is actually a great maw, or just jagged tooth shaped rocks that the Ogres happen to worship.
