Whether you like to cooperate with your partner, compete against them, or join forces against your friends, there is a board game for you.

Going out for Valentine’s Day can be overrated. Between crowds, high prices, and higher expectations, sometimes a much more fun way to spend the holiday is take out and something low key to do with your sweetie.

Maybe you’re looking for the perfect board games for two players? Or perhaps you’re double-dating. Either way, there are games for every mood.

1. Fog of Love

Fog of Love in board games for couples

If you’re looking for a more one-on-one game for you and your sweetie, Fog of Love is a game for two players. Create and play two characters who meet, fall in love, and have to deal with the challenges of making a relationship work.

It’s an awkward, funny, and incredibly sweet board game for couples. Both players may not always have aligning goals, and a happy ending isn’t assured, but a good time is.

Romantic comedies are fine to watch, but wouldn’t playing through one of your own be better?

2. Codenames: Duet

Codenames is a well-known game for teams, but you can play Codenames: Duet for a one-on-one game. Rival spymasters know the secret identities of twenty-five covert agents, but the teams only know their codenames.

Using single-word clues provided by the spymasters, players have to guess the identify and contact all of their agents first. It’s one of the most simple games out there. This means that you can play a ton of times during the night or use it as a warm-up to a longer game.

And, it comes in varieties. Would you and your beau prefer board games for couples with a Disney flair? That’s an option!

3. Azul

Styled around the aesthetic of Moorish decorative tiles, Azul is a tile laying game. Players score points based on how they have placed their tiles and decorated their palace. But don’t accidentally give your partner an advantage on their own palace design! If you’re in a couple that enjoys a little friendly competition and beautiful patterns, Azul is sure to be a hit.

4. Ladies & Gentlemen

One of my personal favorites, Ladies & Gentlemen is a surprising amount of fun. Teams of two act as a couple over a week with the town’s big fancy party coming up.

Half of the team puts together an extravagant outfit so they can show up all of their friends. Meanwhile, the other half of the team has to “go to work at the banks.” Except “work” and “the bank” looks a lot like blindly grabbing numbered chits out of a pile and hoping for the best.

Y’know, banking. Asking for a fancy new hat directly would be rude (and is against the rules), so partners talk in vague riddles. This means that it’s easy to accidentally fall into something akin to a roleplaying game. It’s a hilariously and politely competitive game that will let you and your friends know that you are, in fact, the best couple.

Unfortunately, this board game is currently out of print in a lot of places, including the States. Now look at us– all dressed up and nowhere to go. Hopefully, it’ll come back around soon.
