Community Backlash Proves The Stars Aren’t Right For Chaosium’s Call Of Cthulhu NFTs
Chaosium, makers of Call of Cthulhu, have scrapped their plans for future Cthulhu related NFTs after widespread community backlash.
Yesterday, Chaosium announced that it was suspending plans for future NFTs. Following a widespread backlash across their social media platforms. The venerable game company appears to have ended its dalliance with non-fungible tokens. It seems that the stars aren’t right for Cthulhu NFTs. Chaosium expressed their deep concern in an announcement via their website.
Chaosium Suspends Plans for Future NFTs
“All of us at Chaosium are deeply concerned by the issues raised around the VeVe digital collectible releases from last July. We take these concerns very seriously—our fans and the communities built around Chaosium are our lifeblood. We go back a long way, and that means a lot to us. We want to make sure you are comfortable with the way we do business.
While we address the concerns of the tabletop gaming community we have halted our plans for future NFT releases.”
The post goes on to outline the timeline between Chaosium and VeVe, makers of NFTs for a wide variety of brands. The vast majority of the community doesn’t want NFTs. Community anger was palpable, even as Chaosium tried to position their relationship with VeVe as makers of “ethical NFTs”.
We don’t have time to get into why carbon offsetting is a scam and has been since the concept was introduced decades ago. The fact remains NFTs are problematic at best, and destructive at worst. They’re why you can’t get a PS5. As Chaosium put it, they understand that when NFTs show up, people are inevitably angry and disappointed.
The statement continues:
“We appreciate that many of our fans are angry and disappointed. We hear you. Your concerns must be listened to and addressed. That is why, in cooperation with TYPE40 and VeVe, we have made the decision outlined above. We do not have another scheduled release on VeVe or any other NFT marketplace. We will never require anyone to own an NFT/digital collectible to enjoy any Chaosium product or game.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. Thank you for patiently waiting for our reply. So much passion for what we do is a good thing. It’s been that way since 1975, and in this digital age we remain The Chaosium.

Hopefully, this is a lesson all game manufacturers will learn from.
