D&D: ‘One WotC Digital Feature A Year’ Starting In 2023
Wizards of the Coast quarterly earnings call revealed big plans for the future of D&D video games starting in 2023.
Earlier this week WotC made waves as the first billion-dollar tabletop publisher. But in the Quarterly Earnings Call, incoming CEO of Hasbro and former WotC President Chris Cocks revealed that the future is even bigger for D&D.
Just last year, Cocks revealed that the future of D&D was in video games. This was shortly after Wizards of the Coast leveled up at Hasbro, becoming head of their digital publishing ambitions. Now we’re seeing the fruits of that pay out. With a recent push for Magic: the Gathering Arena into a more digital format, now operating as a license model, the way is paved. Cocks outlined a bit of what we can expect on the earnings call, answering an investor’s question (emphasis ours):
“We also had Magic: The Gathering Online, which is our older or our original trading — digital trading card game that we’ve converted to a license model as opposed to an owned and operating model.
And that will be operated by our partners at Daybreak Studios. So, those two could create some headwinds that Arena and continued growth in our digital RPG business will continue to work against. Longer term, we expect to have a new release, at least one every year starting in 2023 through the foreseeable future.
Cocks later clarified that the 2023 release will be in the second half of the year. But good news–we can expect an announcement later this year. What does all that mean?
Well we already know that WotC is working on five or six different games. There’s at least one other Open World Game in development over at Hidden Path.
And we also know that WotC partnered with former Bioware Devs James Ohlen and Jesse Sky to create a new games studio, reportedly working on “non-D&D” projects. So the future looks bright–if digital–for D&D.
Happy Adventuring!
