Oscars Fan Favorite Category– Let your Voice Be Heard
In an attempt to get audiences interested again, an Oscars Fan Favorite Category has been added this year. Find out where you can vote.
Big Hollywood award ceremonies have been on the decline in recent years. Only 9.8 million Americans watched the Oscars last year– compared with 43.7 million in 2014. The Golden Globes didn’t have a show this year, they just shared the winners on their Twitter account. I don’t think anyone outside of the industry missed the ceremony.
“I don’t get why movie people care so much if other people care what awards we give ourselves. To me, maybe people just don’t care. I don’t care who wins the automobile awards. No other industry expects everyone to care about what awards they shower upon themselves. Maybe people just don’t care. Maybe they did for a while and they stopped caring. And why should they?”
I defend award season only because it brings a subset of movies to the popular consciousness. Do I think we need the three hour long, $44 million televised ceremony? No.
Oscars Fan Favorite Category
Interest in the pomp and circumstance is going down year by year– even from within their own ranks. In an attempt to regain interest, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to add a fan category this year.
“Movie lovers unite! Make your voice heard this Oscars season by voting in this year’s Fan Favorite for a chance to win a trip to the 95th Oscars and voting on the Cheer Moment Top 5 to win a Movie Lovers Prize Pack! Tune in to the 94th Oscars on 3/27 to see which films win!”
The Oscars Fan Favorite Category is open-ended– folks can vote for any movie that came out in 2021, whether or not it got an official nomination. That leaves the field open for comic book and horror movies that normally wouldn’t be Oscar contenders.
Or any direct to video Bruce Willis movie– there are eight to choose from.
There are already organized efforts for recent releases that didn’t get a nomination like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Tik Tik Boom, Malignant, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
You can watch the vote live on Twitter and join in using the #OscarsFanFavorite hashtag. Not a Twitter user? No worries, you cast your vote on the Academy’s website till March 3rd.
