Last week’s Star Trek sequel announcement had its own cast scratching their heads.

Last week, Paramount and producer JJ Abrams announced their plans to bring the reboot series back to the screen with a Star Trek sequel. Deadline reported that the studio was in talks with Chris Pine and was planning on working with the rest of the cast. There were plans to start filming at the end of the year.

The news shocked fans – and apparently, it also shocked the actors that were supposed to be participating. They had no idea a movie was being made before it was discussed on a Wall Street investor’s call.

Paramount Said What?

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story.

Sources tell [us] that most, if not all, teams for the franchise’s primary players — who include Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, and John Cho — were not aware that an announcement for another film was coming, much less that their clients would be touted as a part of the deal, and certainly not that their clients would be shooting a movie by year’s end.

It seems a lot of things weren’t in place at the time of the announcement. While they had a December 22, 2023 theatrical release set it wasn’t greenlit. The movie had no budget set and the script isn’t complete. Add that to a cast that had no idea anything was going on and you’ve got a mess.

The streaming wars are hot and the desire to get a big hit in theaters is bigger than ever. Trek is the backbone of Paramount’s streaming plans, but they haven’t put a movie out in six years. It’s time. This screw-up will likely mean that Paramount will lose negotiation leverage. If the Star Trek sequel gets made with the original cast, it’s going to be more expensive than it was before last week.
