‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Ep. 6 – ‘From the Desert Comes a Stranger’
The Book of Boba Fett‘s second to last episode has everything fans want from a Star Wars series. And guess who’s joined the fight.
With just one more episode left in The Book of Boba Fett, everything is moving quickly towards the endgame. Between cameos, plot, and all of of the Star Wars lore that fans crave, this was another great episode. It was just, once again, light on Boba Fett…
This breakdown will be loaded with spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the episode yet find something else to read until you’ve had a chance to catch up.
Cobb Vanth
Book-turned-live-action-character, previous owner of Boba Fett’s armor, and Marshall on Mars Mos Pelgo Freetown is still taking his job as the town’s protector very seriously. The episode opens with him intercepting a Pyke spice deal. He’s more or less willing to let it go this time if they pack it up and never come back.
But the Pykes didn’t come to play. Cobb is a slightly faster draw, and spaghetti-western style quick-draws three of them into the great beyond. The fourth goes with a strongly-worded warning and their credits. But the spice is left behind and Vanth quickly kicks it over into the Tatooine sands.
Just Some Jedi Doing Jedi Stuff
Din finally attempts to pay his visit to Grogu, but when he arrives, R2 is the entire greeting party. I’m pretty sure Din doesn’t speak binary because R2 clearly says some version of “I’m going to waste your time so hard,” and leads him to what will, in the future, be Luke’s Jedi school. I’m sure that school’s gunna go great. Nothing bad will happen there, no sir.
R2 takes a quick nap as Din seems to realize that his time isn’t being respected but he also doesn’t know where anyone is so he waits. Ahsoka eventually approaches him and the two talk about Grogu and what he child needs.
Din wants to see his foundling and keeps referencing the present. Ahsoka is adamant that interrupting his training would make the attachment stronger and his development as a Jedi more difficult. Eventually, Din leaves, placing the baby Yoda-shaped present in Ahsoka’s care.
We’re given a peppering of scenes of Grugu’s Jedi training, some of which is reminiscent to Luke’s training. And honestly, these scenes are great.
Grogu is growing and learning but also holding back. Luke points out that the little guy’s heart doesn’t always seem to be in it, but at the same time Grogu is remembering who he is (and reliving a traumatic flashback to Order 66).
Ahsoka approaches the pair during one of these training montages and gives Luke the gift for Grogu. They share a few words, Ahsoka mention’s Luke’s father, and they part ways. It’s a scene that you know has quiet communication behind the words, and makes us want to see a version of the galaxy where Ahsoka could have known the Skywalker kids as kids.
After they chat, she leaves, and Luke gives Grogu a choice. He can have the gift from Din, lean into his connections, and renounce the ways of the Jedi.
Or, he can have Yoda’s super cool lightsaber and be a space wizard. But also maybe never see Din again because reaching-puberty for a Yoda is an entire human life time.
Din’s Doings
After Din fails at picking his son up from Jedi school (for now, who knows what Grogu will choose), he heads back to Tatooine. Fennec has a presentation on what to expect from the Pykes.
While they have the skilled people they need for this particular gang war, they don’t necessarily have the foot soldiers. Din may have a solution though.
He heads to visit Cobb Vanth, explaining that a Pyke problem for Mos Espa will eventually be a problem for Mos Pelgo Freetown. But the residents aren’t convinced.
They fought a krayt dragon (whose skull you can see the Jawa’s hauling around), and they’re tired now. Big city problems aren’t their problems, and Vanth already sent the Pykes packing.
Din asks him to think about it as a favor and Vanth agrees. As Din leaves Cobb asks to get every fighting man and woman together for a meeting.
It’s implied that he’s going to tell them that the Pykes are already moving spice in the outskirts of their town. But then he sees the eponymous stranger coming from the desert.
The Pykes And Cad Bane
The Pykes have been busy and angry. Boba Fett still refuses to give up Jabba’s old territory, and Cobb Vanth sure did unalive some of their guys and take their spice. They’re mad, and looking to send a few messages.
Next is a series of scenes that play out in the slow motion of a viewer that knows what’s coming and is disappointed. The two enter Garsa Fwip’s bar, The Sanctuary, long enough to leave an ice-cream-maker-shaped bomb.
They’re never inconspicuous, and Garsa knows that something is going on. But in the end, she’s helpless to save her business or any of her patrons or employees…. or likely even herself.
To Vanth, they send the stranger.
Fans likely recognized the silhouette and wide-brimmed hat from the first moment Cobb saw him on the horizon. But at long last Cad Bane joins the live-action lineup.
Vanth sends everyone indoors, his marshal-sense apparently tingling, and he and Cad exchange a few words. Cad wants the nice folks in Freetown to ignore any Pyke activity and mind their business when it comes to anything Boba Fett-related.
But Cobb isn’t having it and the two talk in circles for a bit. Each is reaching for their gun, waiting for the opportune moment to out-quick-draw the other.
Unfortunately, Cobb’s deputy is an unwelcome distraction and Cad shoots them both. We’re left not sure if Cobb is alive or not. But the town that had previously rallied around their marshal will seem much more interested in joining this fight now.
