Video Games: ‘Witcher 3’ & ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Developers Announce New Studio
Former developers from the studio that made Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, have started their own studio called Rebel Wolves.
Former developers of CD Projekt Red announced that they are launching a new studio known as Rebel Wolves. And they’ve already announced their first project will be a “dark fantasy RPG.”
CEO of Rebel Wolves Puts the “Team First”
Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, previously the game director on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as well as head of production on Cyberpunk 2077 is now CEO of Rebel Wolves. He’s already gathered a group of talented developers for the startup studio based out of Warsaw, Poland.
Tomaszkiewcz says that their goal is to have a studio of about 80 people. They’re looking to hire more talent for these roles in the coming months. The goal of is a 2025 release for their first game.
He also claims he has a “mission of putting the team first – always,” as apposed to the industry standard of overworking game developers in order to meet tight schedules.
The first game looks like it will be come from the same thematic vein as The Witcher. Tomaszkiewicz descries the upcoming project as “a dark fantasy, story-focused open world AAA RPG…. Overall, the game will have a similar scope to the Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3 but will be far more non-linear.”
CD Projekt Red: Mistreatment of Developers
CD Projekt Red had notoriously come under scrutiny for mistreatment of employees and bullying. Tomaszkiewicz promises Rebel Wolves will be a much different studio with a much different culture.
“For all of us here at Rebel Wolves, video games were always something we felt destined to do—something ingrained in our DNA. Personally, I couldn’t be happier to have banded together with friends who share this passion. We’re developing a video game we’d like to play in a way that games should be made. We want to evolve the cRPG genre by creating unforgeable stories and stirring deep emotions, all while working as a tightly knit team united by a shared goal and ambition.
Collectively, we envision Rebel Wolves as a place where experienced game developers can reignite their passion, where they can focus on their craft and pour their love into an amazing, ambitious title. We want to stay small and agile—a place where people know and care for each other.”
A commitment to better working conditions and a healthy working environment is refreshing in the game industry. And with the pedigree of the team spearheading Rebel Wolves, we’re optimistic to see what they will produce going forward.
Unfortunately, at this time there are few details regarding their first project. Aside form a 2025 release and the genre, little is known. Rebel Wolves will be hiring in the coming months as well as allowing work-from-home for those not local to Poland.
