Warhammer 40K: I Want The ‘Generic’ Version Of These Vehicles
Games Workshop has some awesome vehicles that have been modified for war — I want to see the civilian models though.
The Grimdark is a big place. There’s more battlefield that we can count with planetary systems in the balance. But for every battleground there’s a dozen worlds that are blissfully at peace. They might be the next target or short hop through the warp away — but war isn’t everywhere in the Grimdark. There’s bound to be civilian industry out there and we’ve even seen evidence of that in the lore and in the models from Games Workshop.
Sure these shipping containers have guns on them — but that’s just a security feature.
We’ve seen some of the industrial versions of things like the shipping containers above. We’ve even seen the crane vehicles that help move them. I love seeing these little glimpses into the civilian side of the Grimdark. That’s why these kits make me wonder about the “generic” civilian versions of these models.
Ork Trukks And Buggies
Speed Freeks introduced us to a whole assortment of new variants of Ork Trukks and Buggies. While we could list ALL of them, them main point here is that these vehicles are clearly looted vehicles. They were scrap that was reworked and reshaped from some base vehicles into something Orky! I want to see those “base” vehicles, pre-scrap and pre-orky.
I don’t think any of these vehicles started off as hot rods — or at least orky hot rods. And that’s my point. What did they look like before? I want to find out.
Genestealer Cult Vehicles
The Goliath Truck from the Genestealer Cults is another example of a civilian vehicle that got repurposed for war. This thing is a work truck that the cultists bolted guns on and have repurposed mining equipment on. The Rock Crusher version is an even better example of that. But it’s not just the Goliath from the GSC.
The Ridgerunner is another case of “this used to be a civilian buggy that you bolted some weapons on, didn’t you” syndrome. You can see hints of the form of the vehicle before the guns were added. But hey, this is the Grimdark and GW does have games where the cars come stock with guns, too…
Anyhow…Genestealer Cults! There’s one other group of vehicles, too:
The Jackal Bikes and particularly the ATV are another group of vehicles that are clearly repurposed. If you take the guns away and the swap the riders out…you’ve got civilian transportation.
Astra Militarum
The Taurox is basically a Humvee with tracks instead of tires. And if we’re being 100% honest, we think the tracks were a bit overkill and ridiculous. If the front two tracks were tires, this would have been an awesome looking half-track. If all for sets were just tires, then it would have just been a Humvee.
Anyways, if the Humvee would later be sold as a civilian vehicle then why can’t there be a Taurox version of that, too?
Why Do You Even Want These Things?!
Two reasons really. The first reason is that these generic kits could be cool for Astra Militarum players. I think the kits could be used as auxilary forces or even new units for the Astra Militarum line in general. I mean, look at the Jackals. You’re telling me the Astra Militarum doesn’t have scout units like that? Why not modernized Rough Riders on Dirt bikes? Just throwing that out there.
The second reason is because Necromunda: Ash Wastes is coming. I hoping that this game is a lot more like Gorkamorka than Speed Freeks. In with that in mind, I want to see more generic vehicle kits that the various gangs can “acquire” for their use. From a production standpoint, I think it would be a lot easier to take a generic kit and offer bits or upgrade packs for specific factions vs having to make a new vehicle for each gang again.
These “generic” base vehicles + an upgrade pack seem like a much more feasible option in my mind and it would be internally consistent with the fact that these gangs really are all using similar tech. They are still a part of the Imperium afterall.
Generic “Outcasts” are a good example. We need “Outcast” style vehicles.
What repurposed civilian vehicles would you like to see the base version of?
