Age of Sigmar: Adepticon Reveals Review

Well, it wasn’t what I hoped for, but I guess it’s pretty cool.

The Adepticon preview drop has come and gone and it was…mediocre. Sure we saw some interesting things, but Age of Sigmar seemed to get the short end of the stick. Ash Wastes is getting an incredible box, 40k is FINALLY seeing two wound marines, and AoS got…some terrain and plastic Charon. Don’t get me wrong, the new Season of War is cool, but it seems like a bit of a letdown alongside everything else. But, if you play Nighthaunt, or if you like building up terrain, you were probably pretty stoked. Let’s take a look at the big reveals from the Preview Video.

Thondian Strongpoint

Ok, so this is admittedly pretty cool. Alongside some of the Dawnbreaker scenery that we saw with Dominion’s release, we have a massive (and thankfully long dead) skeleton and what appears to be a bound Lumineth Realm-lords shrine. The skeleton in particular is a fantastic centerpiece, measuring in at 12″. In addition to all that cool stuff, we get the first of the Incarnate souls released in plastic, the Krondspine. Die-hard fans will remember the old deer-faced Incarnate from Forge World, and this is a pretty neat stand-in. I’m looking forward to seeing what it does on the tabletop, and hope it lives up to the hype.

Season of War: Thondia

A treat for Narrative players, the next Season of War will take place in the wild city of Thondia. This gorgeous tome contains rules for creating Ghurish heroes, new Realm rules for your games, and some lore details about the bestial Realm. While we don’t know if it will do much for Matched Play just yet, the Narratives contained within are worth looking forward to for players who like a little story with their army men. Plus, that flaming Incarnate on the front is beautiful, and I’m hoping to see at least a few enterprising hobbyists paint their Krondspine in those colors.

Awlrach the Drowner

Rounding out the reveals was the ghastly ferryman of Nagash, Awlrach the Drowner. A fiend in life, Nagash found a use for him in unlife to ferry the dead to the various afterlives of Shyish. We don’t know what he’s going to do on the tabletop, other than look flashy, but right now, that’s enough. Nighthaunt players have gotten the lion’s share (don’t tell Sigmar) of new releases, and rightly so. They were a forgotten faction for a long while, and it’s good to see them return to form. However, I wish we saw some new things for Daughters of Khaine too. Hopefully, we’ll get more reveals as the army box gets closer.
