E3 has been canceled, online and off this year, per the expo’s organizers. Here’s what we know so far.

This year’s E3, originally planned as an online-only event for summer 2022, has been canceled. Organizers working with the Entertainment Software Association confirmed the news.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo had originally planned to be in-person, though that was canceled in January. Now, organizers have canceled the digital-only version as well.

Speaking with Polygon, the ESA organizers issued a full statement, including plans to bring the convention back in full in 2023, both in-person and online. Here’s their full statement:

“E3 will return in 2023 with a reinvigorated showcase that celebrates new and exciting video games and industry innovations.

We previously announced that E3 would not be held in person in 2022 due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19. Today, we announce that there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022.

Instead, we will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience.

We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023.

Look for more news and announcements soon.”

Last year, E3 was held online-only, with many major game publishers participating. However, translating the event to an online only format left some audience members in the lurch. So the cancellation of the online-only portion makes sense, given that the Expo was never designed to be digital-only in the first place.

Though E3 is canceled for the year, people looking for more gaming events might tune in to the Summer Game Fest. The Summer Game Fest 2022 will take place in June, featuring a slate of digital livestream shows.
