MTG: Mark Rosewater On 3rd-Party Magic Sets
Mark Rosewater answered questions about premier/Standard legal sets set outside of Magic: the Gathering. In short? You don’t have to worry.
With the Street Fighter Secret Lair drop getting ready to bring Ryu and Guile and Chun-Li and so on to Magic: the Gathering, many folks have been wondering what the future looks like for Magic the Gathering. Especially since we know other sets, such as Warhammer 40K and Lord of the Rings, are in the works.
The latter, we know, is designed to be drafted. The former, we’ve seen a few previews for, so far. Both stirred up controversy last year, but Mark Rosewater’s answers might put fans hearts at rest for now. According to Rosewater himself:
Can we expect to see premier/Standard legal sets in the future from third party IPs?
Answer: There are no current plans to do that.
Now, depending on how broad a view you take, this answer means a few different things. Most obviously, it means probably not going to see third party sets as the core “premier sets”. Rosewater might be reluctant to say never, but sets are typically planned out well in advance of the release cycle.
And, in all likelihood, 3rd party means “outside of WotC.” So, you can probably rule out any sets from Hasbro IP as new modern/standard sets. As much as we might want to see Peppa Pig tempo decks take the meta by storm, WotC has plenty of reasons to want to keep their focus on their core IP. Especially with an animated series in the works.
But what about non-modern/standard? There is a place where these other IPs might fit. Horizons is a rapidly growing and evolving format. It could be a testing ground for concepts and characters, especially with a renewed emphasis on digital play.
