‘The Batman’ Deleted Scene Gives a Better Look at Barry Keoghan’s Joker
Audiences got a look at Keoghan’s iteration of the Joker in The Batman deleted scene. Who is this Joker – will we see him in Gotham again?
In a new deleted scene released from this year’s The Batman, the Caped Crusader consults with the Joker in an attempt to end the Riddler’s reign of terror over Gotham. The Clown Prince of Crime is played by Eternals star Barry Keoghan.
The Batman Deleted Scene
The scene takes place in Arkham Asylum. Batman visits with the Joker to try and uncover the Riddler’s intentions. The scene was revealed yesterday on the Riddler’s rataalada.com website. Of course, Batman’s attempt to profile this madman never works out. The Joker points out how similar Batman and the Riddler are in their mindsets. Though the scene was deleted from the film’s theatrical release, it reveals the Joker doing what the Joker does best: holding up an uncomfortable mirror to the Batman’s own psyche.
Barry Keoghan’s Joker
For most of the scene, the Joker’s face is just out of focus. We can see his pale skin, faded green hair growing in thin patches, and his wide, clown-like mouth. And while he’s out of focus, his eyes are clearly reflected in the glass, making the scene more terrifying. He mentions an anniversary, presumably of a battle with Batman. It looks like the Joker is one of the first villains Batman takes on.
As the conversation continues, we see his hands and scalp, which are deeply scarred. Nearer to the end of the conversation, as the Joker gets closer to what he thinks is the truth of Batman’s nature, the camera focuses on parts of his face. Also pale and deeply scarred, we first see his eyes. And then we get the mouth, that wide, red, laughing gash with stained teeth.
Keoghan’s laugh is excellent. His expressions are eerie, and he looks to have undergone an intensely painful circumstance that is likely a part of his back story. But will we ever see that back story on screen?
What’s Next for Matt Reeves’ Joker?
As of yet, Matt Reeves has given no confirmation that any one particular villain will face off with The Batman next. Just because the major character appeared in the film doesn’t mean there are future plans for his character. Reeves told Variety at the beginning of the month that he “thought it’d be really neat if so much of the fabric of Gotham just already existed.” All this considered, we’re especially glad this deleted scene was released so we could get a better look at Keoghan’s take on Batman’s most infamous foe.
