‘Umbrella Academy’ Introduces Elliot Page’s Viktor, His Character Will Come Out as Transgender in Season 3

A few months before the season 3 premiere, Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page posts a first look at his role as Viktor Hargreeves.

We’ve known for a while that Page would be returning to his role in the Netflix series based on a series of comic books by Gerard Way. But after he announced his transition, it was unclear how that would affect the character of Vanya. Now, thanks to a post on Elliot’s Twitter, we can expect to meet Viktor Hargreeves in June.

Umbrella Academy‘s Elliot Page Reveals Photo

Page announced in 2020 that they identified as a trans and non-binary (he/they). Since then, his Instagram has been full of affirming photos and messages for other trans folks. Soon after his coming out, he was confirmed for the third season of Umbrella Academy. Netflix also announced that they would be adjusting the credits from the first two seasons to show his chosen name, but no news was given as to what that meant for his character.

This change isn’t reflective of the comics – Vanya’s character is a cis-gendered woman in the source material. But the character for the show was understandably changed by Elliot’s own experience. As a fan of the comics, it actually makes a lot of sense. I mean, Vanya’s whole first season arc was about repressing who they are at the behest of their raising. Vanya was taught that they were born one way, but that wasn’t true. It’s a parallel that resonates with LGBTQ people, particularly those who have been raised to perform a gender that isn’t their true nature. Narratively speaking, there’s no need to stretch because it’s not a reach.

Everything We Know About Season 3

The story picks up after the gang has saved the world and left the 1960s. The 2019 they come back to isn’t the same, however. They enter the Umbrella Academy house to discover that Hargreeves has started a different group of young superheroes – the Sparrows. The entire season will take place in a mysterious place called Hotel Oblivion (which is also the title of the third TPB). We’ve already gotten a look at the cast of the Sparrows.

In February, the show dropped a new series of season 3 posters. All of the faces are hidden by (what else?) umbrellas, so we can only guess which characters these posters feature.

Season 3 of ‘Umbrella Academy’ will be streaming on Netflix on June 22nd.
