And by “hugs” we mean murder. Get ready for the new and improved Tyranid Toxicrene with this update!

By now you probably know that a new Tyranid Codex is coming soon. Based on yesterday’s reveal about Fleshborers it’s easy to start yelling about power creep. Well, we’re not going to talk about that right now. But we are going to point you towards another creep altogether. This one involves some very nasty tendrils and a lot of toxic spores. The Toxicrene is about to come out to play.

“Toxicrenes are one of the giant beast-breeds engineered by the Hive Fleets, specialised in biowarfare. These towering monsters are known for the lashing toxic tendrils that grasp and slash at their foes, and the clouds of semi-sentient spores they pump out of their carapace chimneys.”

Tyranid Toxicrene Rules

With this codex update the Toxicrene is getting some attention. First up, it’s got a returning ability with a twist. Choking Spores are back but are functioning differently. And yes, these are also shared by Venomthropes, too.

It’s now a debuff aura and impacts enemy units within 3″ with a -1 to hit for their attacks. That’s really going to be helpful for your swarms once they close the gap. And once these Toxicrenes get into combat they can also cause some mortal wounds on a 4+ at the start of the round.

Not a bad start! But we haven’t gotten to the good stuff yet. I hope you like your Tendrils with a side of ouch!

Don’t forget that the Toxicrene is a MONSTER which means it can shoot while engaged. That’s 2D6 shots at 8″ with another 12 attacks in close combat! All of those attacks wound non-vehicles or Titans on a 2+ as well. With an -2 for both shooting and melee, that’s going to make this monster slap infantry around with ease. Oh and don’t bother trying to run…

“Of course, you might not have a choice. Hive Mind players might remember the Grasping Tendrils Stratagem – that’s back, but as an entirely free ability. Once per turn, each Toxicrene can use its Massive Grasping Tendrils to envelop an enemy unit – on a D6 roll of a 3+ (or 2+, if they’re INFANTRY), they can’t Fall Back at all.”

And we’re not even going to dive into the combos with Synaptic Imperatives either. Because that’s going to be a thing, too!
