‘M3GAN’ – Haunted Dolls Get Technical in New James Wan Project
James Wan is back with a tale of a creepy AI doll that goes out of control. Meet M3GAN.
James Wan is known for bringing Saw, The Conjuring, and Malignant to the screen. He is one of the biggest voices in horror today – whether he’s directing or producing. The jump-scare king’s next project focuses on a familiar horror trope and gives it a modern twist. No demons or ghosts this time. This creepy doll’s AI has gone horribly wrong.
In M3GAN, a roboticist at a toy company uses artificial intelligence to create life-like dolls. They are programmed to be a kid’s best friend; as well as help parents keep tabs on their kids while keeping them safe. When the roboticist takes in her orphaned niece, she gives the girl a prototype of the doll she’s working on. A choice that she’ll regret.
Meet M3GAN in this first poster revealed at Cinamacon… those are some creepy AF eyes.
The script by Akela Cooper (Malignant) is based on a story by James Wan. Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) is directing. It stars Allison Williams, Ronny Chieng, and Violet McGraw. It hits theaters on January 13, 2023.
This isn’t the first time Wan has ventured into creepy doll territory. He also produced the Annabell trilogy that spun off of The Conjuring. All three movies are on HBO Max if you feel like making an evening of it. Annabell Comes Home is the best of the bunch. You don’t have to watch the others for it to make sense, and it’s got some great scares.
