Monkey Island Creator Announces New Game – ‘Return To Monkey Island’
Get ready to return to Monkey Island in… Return to Monkey Island a new Monkey Island game unveiled earlier today by the original creator.
Monkey Island’s back. Not only that, it’s just around the corner. Earlier today Ron Gilbert unveiled Return to Monkey Island, due for release in 2022. Existing in “complete secrecy” for the past two years, the new game promises to follow in the footsteps of Lucasfilm Adventure Games. A fine tradition. Here’s the original announcement on Twitter.

But that’s not the first announcement. This is the big flashy trailer, but the original announcement came April 1st:
Why does this matter? Because Ron Gilbert understands how to commit to a bit. He made a promise back in 2013 and kept it.
If I ever get to make another Monkey Island, I'm going to announce it on April 1st.

All of which to say, that’s the same sort of spirit you can expect from the new Monkey Island game, coming to you from Ron Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox, Devolver Digital, and Lucasfilm Games.
Announcing Return to Monkey Island, the long-awaited follow-up to the legendary Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge by Ron Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games, coming 2022.
Monkey Island games made a lasting impact on gaming. They brought humor. They brought ingenuity. Because they were first and foremost about the world. And that world is Monkey Island. A world where you can fight someone with insults. A world of self-aware jokes.
All of which means this new game should be pretty promising.
