‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Trailer Breakdown – Yes, That is Zeus and Other Easter Eggs
The first trailer has dropped – let’s dig a little deeper into it with this Thor: Love and Thunder trailer breakdown.
The first trailer for the next installment of Thor Odinson’s story dropped yesterday. It shows a little bit of what he’s been up to since the defeat of Thanos. He’s joined the Guardians of the Galaxy for adventures. And he’s taking time to rediscover who he is after the loss of Asgard. And that’s not all…
Thor: Love and Thunder Trailer Breakdown
Thor’s retro costume from his first days in Marvel comics is in the opening. It has it all – from the goofy helmet with giant wings to the yellow straps on his shoes. It’s not the only major call back to Thor’s comic book roots this trailer has.
Thor’s journey isn’t just internal. He has decided to get back to his Strongest Avenger™ physique. His set up is complete with positive affirmation hat and giant skeleton. Maybe it’s a Greek Titan?
He’s put his weapons down and joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. For now. Starlord doesn’t look like he can take much more of the god’s antics. The rest of the crew doesn’t seem too happy to have him, either.
Also: shout out to Korg’s new ensemble and Thor’s Jack Burton/Thunderstrike inspired look.
Not sure who this pirate is, but her hair is awesome.
New Asgard seems to be doing well. Valkyrie does not seem to be happy in the role that she was given, though. Looks to me like she’s dreaming of other things, not the most recent budget analysis. The suit, however, is fantastic. If you look to her right, it seems Miek his own dandy style suit.
New Gods & A God Killer
Our first look at the gravity defying Olympus.
That is Russel Crowe’s back – he’s playing Zeus Panhellenios. The Greek god is a staunch ally of Asgard and its people. Well, not all of them. He banished Loki to Hades at one point. Zeus also has an affection for Earth even though the worship of the Olympian gods has ceased. He will be an important asset in the battle that’s brewing.
This straight from the comics shot is from Thor: God of Thunder Vol. 1 #3, which was drawn by Esad Ribić and colored by Ive Svorcina. It’s part of the God Butcher arc. The creature is Falligar the Behemoth who died at the hands of Gorr himself. The issue was written by Jason Aaron, who wrote the 2015 Jane Foster series the movie also references.
This is likely where Thor’s fun times end and serious saving the universe again begins.
After that frantic look – we have our first look at Natalie Portman as Thor holding Mjölnir. There hasn’t been an explanation as to how Jane Foster picked up the hammer in the movie.
In the comics, Jane took over for Thor when Mjölnir deemed him unworthy. She has the same superhuman strength, endurance, flight, and lightning powers. In the comics she fought Malekith, the Frost Giants, Titania, and The Destroyer from Asgard. She’s no slouch and I can’t wait to see what she does in this movie.
Quick Observations
- No Gorr *sad face*
- No more heterochromia – the blue eyes are back
- Thor Odinson’s new look is great
- Flying goat boat!
- Is that a reference to Cocktail on the goat boat?
- The bifrost is back!
- Don’t forget the Highlander reference in the poster
Thor: Love and Thunder Cast & Details
Thor: Love and Thunder sees the return of Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Plus Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Oscar winners Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. And, of course, the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The film finds Thor on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher. He seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster. Who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance. And stop him before it’s too late.
Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8th.
