‘Kingdom Hearts’ Creator Has Insight About Game’s New Setting
Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of Kingdom Hearts, shared some new information regarding Kingdom Hearts 4‘s new setting.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is officially on its way and future players have been introduced to Quadratum. This realistic-looking world will be the setting for the upcoming game. But we have questions such as “What is a Quadratum?” Luckily, series creator Tetsuya Nomura has some answers.
In the now released trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, Quadratum looks a lot like the real world Shibuya district of Tokyo. When the distinct shadowy monsters Kingdom Hearts is known for make an appearance, it doesn’t seem that out of place for a vaguely anime styled Tokyo. But it is odd for Kingdom Hearts. The series is known for its cartoony animation style. Mixing the signature Disney animation style with the more anime look of the Final Fantasy series, Kingdom Hearts was a collection of games with a very distinct look.
What is Quadratum?
Quadratum makes it clear that even if some things are staying the same, many things will be changing.
In an interview with Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura attempted to clear up some of the confusion about Quadratum. Because the trailer’s explanation that it’s not the “real world” but “an afterworld” may just add more confusion.
“From Sora’s perspective, Quadratum is an underworld, a fictional world that is different from reality. But from the point of view of the inhabitants on the Quadratum side, the world of Quadratum is reality, and the world where Sora and the others were is the other side, the fictional world.”
While this is definitely a departure for the standard Kingdom Hearts styling, the concept of many worlds is not. All of the major games have incorporated some amount of reality jumping. But what about some of the most well loved Kingdom Hearts characters?
What About The Disney Characters?
Don’t worry, Tetsuya Nomura promises that our favorite members of the Mickey Mouse club will be in Kingdom Hearts 4.
“Donald and Goofy are looking for clues about Sora in the original world. All the real worlds before the title display are all Quadratum segments and Sora will look realistic, but if he can return to the original world, he will look like Donald and Goofy with shaders like Donald and Goofy.”
We don’t know much else about the game, but the core character will be there and footage looks gorgeous. So we’ll just have to wait and see how the Disney classics fit into the world surrounding Quadratum.
This year Kingdom Hearts is enjoying a twenty year anniversary with the first Kingdom Hearts premiering in 2002. Many, many games over fourteen platforms have made it one of the the most well known video game franchises in history. And a blend of anime, JRPG, and Disney styles made Kingdom Hearts a hit in multiple age groups and game styles. The latest installment of the franchise looks like an interesting and beautiful addition to the universes, and we’re looking forward to seeing what Quadratum will be to us.
