Warhammer 40K: 5 Iconic Troop Units
Troops are the backbone of Warhammer 40,000. These are five that stand out as iconic among the crowd.
There are a TON of Troop options in the game of Warhammer 40,000. Every faction has a couple units that are Troops because you need to have them for your army to really function. Sure, you could run a detachment that doesn’t need them but the are still super useful for snagging objectives. Most armies don’t leave home without them (unless you’re Knights — but that’s another matter).
Today, we’re looking at a handful of the most iconic Troops in the game. When you think “Warhammer 40,000” these are probably some of the units that get conjured up in your mind’s eye. They are for us! So let’s dive in.
Space Marine Tactical Squads
In recent years Primaris Marines have become all the rage. However, Tactical Squads are still the more iconic unit…for now. I think it’s going to take another edition or two before Primaris Marines fully take this slot from their battlebrothers. The humble Tactical Marine might be getting phased out from the game in other ways but their memory will live on.
Ork Boyz
When you think of Orks it’s almost impossible to envision a more iconic unit than the Boyz! These greenskin soccer hooligans are ubiquitous and iconic in their own right. Ork Boyz are one of those units that shows up and you know it’s going to be a good time because they are always down for a scrum.
Hormagaunts
This one was a coin flip for us between the Hormagaunts and Termagants. But at the end of the day Hormagaunts won out. Why? Because they are that fast moving carpet of deadly Tyranid organisms that is so evocative. Genestealers might be the ones crawling through the vents ready to pounce but the Hormagaunts are the unending tidal wave of bodies coming to flood your defenses. Can your pump enough bullets into the horde to stop it before it swallows you whole?
Guardians
In previous editions we might have gone with Dire Avengers. However, with their latest codex Dire Avengers aren’t Troops anymore. That’s okay! Because the Guardians are here to fill that pivotal role. Plus they just received some swanky new plastics and are looking good. Those pointy helmets and shuriken catapults are burned into our minds and the Guardians are here to stay!
Imperial Guardsmen
The Leman Russ Battle Tank isn’t a Troop option or it would be here, too. Fortunately for the Astra Militarum the Guardsmen are here to fill those ranks. You’d be hard pressed to think of a more iconic Troop unit for the Guard than the Guardsmen! That’s probably because their other options look so similar…but that’s not the point. The Imperial Guardsmen are the Emperor’s Anvil. These men and women hold the line against every threat the Grimdark has to offer. They are a Trooper’s Trooper!
