Warhammer 40K: Squats Are Back
Games Workshop has a new video teasing the return of the Squats…and I don’t know what to believe anymore.
It’s been a LONG time coming. Theories have been flying. Folks have been waiting patiently. Warhammer fans of a certain vantage will remember the army known as Squats — and it looks like GW is bringing them back.
Squats Are Back
That’s quite the trailer! If you’re still skeptical you have every right to be. Looking at the calendar, of all days, this is the day to be extra cautious about what you read on the internet. Turns out it’s not all true. But ESPECIALLY today. That said we think this has some serious potential to be a real announcement.
A couple years ago GW did break “the Squat Clock” if you recall. What was the Squat Clock? It was an old gag about the Squat army that every time someone mentioned them Games Workshop would reset the clock for their release date. Or should we say re-release date. The Squats were actually an entire army range consisting of what were essentially Space Dwarves.
But ever since the clock was broken, GW has been hinting and teasing at their return. Aside from breaking the clock GW has brought back Squats in 40k by way of Necromunda:
So it’s pretty evident that GW knows how to make those style models still. We’ve also had teasers about the Demiurg race which fans believe are the remnants of the Squat race, too.
They were even featured in BFG: Armada as T’au Allies. The Demiurg crew were never revealed but everyone thought about their description and put two and two together.
“The Demiurg are a race of short, semi-humanoid traders and miners allied with the Tau Empire.”
If they were/are the Squats they’ve been hanging out on the fringes for a while now. Furthermore, GW just made a 2 minute teaser video. That’s a lot of effort for a gag. Does that mean it’s not a gag? No! But this is one gag you probably don’t want to poke the bear about. The fans would be pretty ticked off if this isn’t true. It wouldn’t be received by folks as a “gag” just because it’s April 1st. The point is the breadcrumbs are there and this sure looks like a big, BIG reveal.
I Want To Believe
Let’s be real — it’s still hard to believe. In fact, I still don’t want to fully buy in. Then again this seems really promising. Could 40k use a new army? Would Squats fill that Space Dwarf-sized void in our hearts? Who knows! But I’m going to wait and withhold judgement until we see some actual models for the Army. But I can already hear the Hype-Train leaving the station.
