Games Workshop has been hinting at something for Warhammer: Underworlds. But what the heck is it?!

If you’ve been paying attention to GW this week then you know that they have been dropping some breadcrumbs about something that is coming to Warhammer: Underworlds. The clues themselves come in the form of an image and a quote. We’re going to go through those clues today and see if we can’t figure out what GW is teasing. So take a crack at those clues…

Clue 1 – “The Shadows Shift”

“No matter how far one descends, there is always a deeper darkness that awaits.”

This image is clearly a reference to Harrowdeep. In that season Warbands have been exploring the depths of Harrowdeep. And now we’re getting a hint that there’s more below — a labyrinth of sorts. And what is this an image of anyway? Well, you can see the skull that’s been split. But what’s inside? Is this some sort of egg? Are those scales? Questions and more questions…

Clue 2 – “The Darkness Deepens”

“It is a maddening labyrinth of impossible dimensions, in which concepts of reality and natural law mean nothing at all.”

Alright, now we’ve got the confirmation that yes, this is indeed a labyrinth. Not only that it sounds like an M. C. Escher painting. Waters going up the walls, dimensions are impossible. Things are getting weird. In this image we can see the Stormcast Eternals are walking around (with one upside down in the distance). It looks like they are being attacked by a Skaven assassin as well as a Daughter of Khaine who’s rushing from the opposite side.

All three of these combatants are existing warbands as well. So no new clues on that front — other than the strange and impossible things happening.

Clue 3 – “The Labyrinth Calls”

“If the ancient legends are true, then deep beneath the ocean bed can be found the resting place of Harrowdeep’s creators – shadow daemons from the liar’s moon of the Orb Duplicita, sworn enemies of the physical world.”

Well this sounds ominous! Shadow Daemons, you say? And what’s up with the liar’s moon of the Orb Duplicita? Is that thing from the first image?! And what are we seeing in the image? Starting from the top we’ve got a weird looking egg-thing. Maybe it’s an eye…hard to tell. But we’ve got more creepy skeletons (which are giant) and they have vines/tendrils going from their split skulls into the egg/eye thing.

This is already some very odd imagery! Moving down this seems like an undersea scene with coral or barnacles everywhere. Plus it looks like giant octopus tentacles surrounding the egg/eye thing. This could be a ship wreck when you look lower. Or it could be some sort of massive ribcage, too. We’ve also got two more folks looking at each other. The bottom person is one of the Stormcasts with a light from earlier. But something else is perched above looking down at them. And are those …cats by the Stormcast figure below?

What Does It All Mean?

Frankly, we’re not entirely sure. Clearly Warhammer: Underworlds is going deep below Harrowdeep. And we’re going to be meeting some very odd things in the dark depths. But there’s one last clue — and it’s from last year.

The new Warband is the upcoming Exiled Dead. Those were revealed at Adepticon. The Lightning theme makes sense as they are powered by Necromancy and science (probably).

But the last bit from the roadmap is the most telling. We’re getting a new Core Set along with a pair of new warbands! I doubt GW would spend multiple days with these vague teasers if they weren’t related to the new Core Set. It’s going to be some sort of labyrinth beneath Harrowdeep. It sounds like the maze is going to be related to whatever creatures live their, too.

Could we be on the cusp of meeting some new faction in AoS? What other secrets are hiding in this maze? GW is going to continue to drop hints this week. So keep an eye out for whatever is next concerning Warhammer: Underworlds!

What would you call the maze below Harrowdeep?
