Warhammer 40K: Remembering 5 Fallen Heroes Of The Imperium
There are lots of martyrs and saints of the Imperium who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Here’s a list of a few of the big names.
The Grimdark Universe has had a lot of death from the tabletop to the lore — it surrounds and infuses everything. There are countless heroes who sold their lives and paid a cost to preserve the Imperium of Man. Today we’re taking a look at a handful of them in remembrance of their sacrifice.
Rogal Dorn was a key figure in the post-Heresy Imperium. He helped to re-unify the Imperium with the help of his brothers through his submission to the Codex. Dorn fell during one of the Black Crusades battling a Chaos Fleet.
According to the Lexicanum:
Rogal Dorn is missing and presumed dead after attacking a Chaos fleet with a vastly outnumbered force. Seeing the importance of attacking the enemy fleet while they were still preparing he relied on hit-and-run attacks until his reinforcements could arrive. Dorn went missing on board the Despoiler Class Battleship Sword of Sacrilege after leading a desperate attack on its bridge. Only his hand (Hand of Dorn) was recovered which is kept in stasis by his chapter.
A tragic figure of the Blood Angels, Captain Tycho is a hero of the Second and Third Wars for Armageddon. He was grievously wounded by an Ork Weirdboy during a clash in the Jungle. He was able to recover but his face was locked in a horrible “rictus grin” for the rest of his life. He hid his face behind a special mask but the mental wounds stayed with him and he developed an obsessive hatred of the Ork Race.
During the Third War for Armageddon, the Black Rage finally took hold and Tycho was loosed upon the Ork-held defenses of Hive-Tempestora. The record shows that Tycho fought with such vigor he was able to ignore wounds that would have killed normal men. Eventually he did succumb to those wounds, but it was his sacrifice that enabled the Blood Angels to take the Ork position.
Ultramarines 1st Company – Battle of Macragge
The Ultramarines 1st Company paid the ultimate price during the First Tyrannic War. They held the Northern Polar Fortress on Macragge and against superior numbers, were able to buy precious time that the Ultramarines needed to defeat the Tyranid Fleet. The defenders were eventually overrun, but because of their valiant efforts, Macragge was spared from oblivion.
Lord Commander Solar Macharius
Lord Commander Solar Macharius led the greatest Imperial Crusade since the Emperor himself and reclaimed nearly a thousand worlds for the Imperium. His conquests extended the far western edge of the Imperium and pushed up against the edge of the Astronomicon’s light. It was at this point that his men refused to push any further into the area known as the Halo Zone. How Macharius died is a bit of a mystery.
The official record is that he died of a jungle fever that was contracted on the planet Jucha. However, the truth is far more sinister. Macharius contracted several deadly diseases believed to be brought on from his traitorous ex-protege Richter (who was said to have turned to Nurgle-worship). Macharius was able to kill Richter, but was then assassinated by a member of the Officio Assassinorum with assistance from Inquisitor Hyronimus Drake. Drake was then assassinated by the same Assassin to cover-up the rest of the conspiracy.
Sanguinius was ultimately killed by his brother Horus aboard the Heretic’s Battle Barge The Vengeful Spirit. Sanguinius was no match for a Chaos-infused Horus at the height of his power. But, according to legend, he was able to create a chink in the armor of Horus. It’s through that small opening that the Emperor is said to of dealt the fatal blow. By sacrificing his own life Sanguinius ensured that the Emperor would win the day – no matter the cost!
