It looks like Dragons of Stormwreck Isle will be taking Lost Mine of Phandelver’s place as the D&D starter set.

Dragons of Stormwreck Isle made waves at D&D Direct. The upcoming new starter set is ready to spring onto the scene. Aimed at attracting new players and new DMs, the starter set promises to be a lot of fun.

One of the big reveals at D&D Direct was the nature of the starter set. We got a peek inside the kit. You can read all about it here. But in the following week, it seems, WotC revealed the new set will, in time, replace the current starter set, Lost Mine of Phandelver.

What does that mean for the Redbrand gang, and the town of Phandalin? Let’s take a look.

D&D’s Stormwreck Isle Will Be the New Starter Set

The news developed over the weekend. The official Wizards D&D Twitter Account made a promo tweet about the upcoming starter set.

If you can’t see it, the tweet reads:

“Every journey has a first step. Explore the Stormwreck Isle in an adventure designed for new players.”

All perfectly normal stuff. But when one user asked about Stormwreck Isle and Lost Mine of Phandelver, the news came out that one was being replaced:

The original Starter Set here is Lost Mine of Phandelver, originally released July of 2014 alongside 5th Edition. It’s been almost a decade in service now. But as D&D evolves (lookin’ at you 2024) the game has changed. Books like Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything has changed the game. Everything from Character Creation to the power of overall subclasses has leveled up, so to speak.

So the new Starter Set has its work cut out for us. And as we’ve learned it’s not just the books that come with the set. There’s a series of video tutorials and a “new player hub” designed to help get new players rolling dice in no time flat.

Lost But Not Staying Lost Permanently

However, the Lost Mine isn’t going to disappear forever. As the D&D account relayed, they’ll keep the Starter Set from being “permanently lost.” We’ll have to see what that shakes out to be like in the coming months. But with the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle up for release July 21st at Target (and then October at your FLGS) it looks like you might have a while yet with Phandelver.

Happy Adventuring!
