Goatboy’s Warhammer 40K: My Favorite Chaos Knight Dreadblades

Goatboy here with my top 3 favorite Dreadblades from the new Chaos Knights codex.

For those that haven’t read the book – a Dreadblade is basically like a house-less Chaos Knight out for a good time.  They can join an army, get a different household like ability, and just be the weird older brother who calls you terrible names.  There are some fun combos you can do with them based on some weapon load outs mixed with this neat ability to pick a custom household trait.  They also could be your warlord as well. They have access to some Relics to create a unique monster on the tabletop.  Or unit of monsters – when you pick a War Dog group as your “Dreadblades”.

The first one will talk about is creating an Iconoclast Warlord Combat jerk that happens to be a Dreadblade.  This is something that could show up in any Iconoclast list that usually relies on their friends to do the shooting.  Most likely you would pick a household with better shooting options and then load up this guy as your murder cannon ball that comes out of the Warp ready to do some damage.

Murder Cannon Ball!

Chaos Knight Rampager – 400pts
Mark of the Warp Stalker – 30pts (Gives you the ability to teleport onto the battlefield and if you get favor you can then teleport again)
Dreadblade – Iconoclast – Frenzied Invaders (Exploding 6’s to hit in close combat)
Relic – Rune of Nak’t’graa – Gains another Fell bond – Prideful Wrath (Counts as Double Wounds for characteristic changes)
Warlord Trait – Eager for the Kill (+1 to Advance/Charge and add +1 attack if within Opponents Deployment Zone)
Arch-Tyrant – Warlord Trait – Knight Diabolus – +1 Attack and Reroll 1’s to hit in melee
430 pts – -1CP to get him Arch-Tyrant for double Warlord Traits

Dreadblade Tactics

This guy is designed to fall from the sky, roll into some kind of evil death Sonic ball, and crazy into your lines.  He is going to kill whatever he touches, most likely hanging out in the wind. Then hopefully he charges into something else next turn.  This is why I set up the ability to count on his highest level most of the time so you have to kill him dead to deal with him.  On top of that you can get him back up again if needed on a 4+ as he is an undivided model.  Heck you could also just do the titan feet and that ends up being 12-14 mortal wounds on a unit if needed.

Captain Bullet Head!

Chaos Knight Despoiler – 375pts
Despoiler Battle Cannon/Diabolus Heavy Stubber X 2 – 120pts
Havoc Missile Pod – 20pts
Mark of the Dread Knight – 40pts – 6+ FNP and Favoured is 5+ FNP
Dreadblade – Iconoclast- Precision Cruelty – Wound roll of a 6 with ranged weapon gain an AP+1 and +1 Damage.
Relic – Rune of Nak’t’graa – Loping Predators (Count as stationary when shooting even if they advanced)
Warlord Trait – Aura of Terror – Causes enemy to roll an extra d6 when doing dread tests and discard the lowest
Arch-Tyrant – Infernal Quest – Gains Objective Secured
Pts: 555 CP: -1 to gain Arch-Tyrant

Dreadblade Tactics

This guy is very expensive. But his design is to always be moving, always be shooting, and anything that hits is an issue.  I don’t think this is always the best one but it feels interesting. He’s this weird backfield predator lobbing damage out to everything in range.  As things hit he starts to get more powerful. Hopefully he can be far enough away to survive the damage back.

The 3 Amigos!

War Dog Executioner X 3 – 465pts
Diabolus Heavy Stubber X 3 – 0pts
Dreadblade – Infernal – Warp Vision
Mirror of Fates – 15pts
Pts: 465 CP: 0

Dreadblade Tactics

Mark my words this is probably the best unit to have for any  Chaos based army wanting to add some Knights to it.  These 3 guys will shift the Tyranid/Aeldari match up immensely. Just by their massive range, ability to throw out huge damage, and ignoring light cover.  There is a lot of things that stack cover and this just helps blow thru that.  If you haven’t noticed they shifted the Autocannon gun to having AP -2 . This is huge on a gun that can ignore light cover.  These 3 things are basically super good Predators ready to do the damage for the Chaos Gods.  If you are a Chaos Knight player you need to really think about going Infernal and taking a unit of these as a Dreadblade.   You will see it in my updated Chaos Knight Tournament list for the next few events at the end of the week.

Chaos Knights can do a lot for armies and finding ways to utilize 3 Armigers is going to be a big thing.  In fact they might shift Death Guard a bit especially looking at 3 Melta carrying jerks running around with some Blight Haulers.  What Dreadblades have you been looking at?  Anything that screams at you as something interesting?

For the Warmaster!
