Marvel Bought the License to the Likeness of Stan Lee – Here’s Why
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Stan Lee’s likeness was sold to Marvel for their future use. And considering his status as the conversational King of character cameos, this seems like a natural fit. But what does it mean for Stan the Man’s iconic grin? Will we see it in future productions? And if so, how?
Details of the Deal
The contract was signed between Marvel and Stan Lee Universe (Genius Brands International and POW! Entertainment). Marvel will be able to license the name and likeness of Stan Lee for 20 years. Having rights to his likeness gives Marvel several options. Not only could the Stan Lee cameo return, but he could become a part of the “experience” of Disney parks.
According to the CEO and chairman of Genius Brands Andy Heyward:
“It really ensures that Stan, through digital technology and archival footage and other forms, will live in the most important venue, the Marvel movies, and Disney theme parks. It’s a broad deal.”
Stan Lee in Future Productions?
Of course, fans can (and do) have complicated feelings about using CGI to insert late performers into future works. Though respectfully handled, the digital insertion of Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing into the newest Star Wars sequel trilogy garnered varying emotions from people.
Of course, just because Disney and Marvel can use CGI to bring Stan cameos back doesn’t mean they’re aiming to. The Man’s likeness can be used for any number of things that don’t even come close to a movie theater. Marvel can now use Stan Lee’s likeness to create action figures, merchandise, and theme park attractions. Using all the moments we had with Stan in life, it’s possible we’ll get on a ride one day and hear the voice of Stan cry “Excelsior!” just as the ride takes off.
