More time is required to tell the Stranger Things Season 4 story – including several two-hour-long episodes.

Stranger Things Season 4 is being split into two parts that will drop this summer. And based on this Collider interview with the show’s creators, we’ll be getting some long episodes. That explains the big budget this season – reportedly $30 million per episode. Ross and Matt Duffer have confirmed that at least two of the episodes are “full-blown movies.”

Along with the extended episode time, they convinced Netflix to add an episode for sake of the story.

“I think we were at least halfway, but I think probably over halfway through this season, were trying to squeeze the story in, and we sat down with our writers, and we said, ‘I don’t think this is feasible in eight episodes’. So we went to Netflix and said, ‘Hey, are you okay if we do one more episode?’, and luckily they were very supportive of that, but that’s how we ended up with that extra episode. But it was not originally planned that way. It wasn’t outlined that way. It was always going to be eight. And then it just ended up being too much story.”

Stranger Things Season 4 Details

The Lovecraftian roots of the show are in full force this season. The events in Hawkins are more than a mysterious agency’s experiment gone wrong, accidentally opening up a portal to another dimension. This is an evil that’s been in the town – and the world – for a very long time.

The creators announced a deadline along with the drop date. Stranger Things will wrap in Season Five, which is a good run for a show like this. Stretching it too much could make the story become repetitious and dull. Stranger Things and its actors (who are aging out of this ‘kids with bikes’ tale) deserve a good ending rather than an endless drag out into blah territory.

This may not be the end. There are also possibilities for spin-offs when this story is done. In a statement, the brothers said:

“There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.”
