Horus Heresy: Liber Mechanicum Preview
The Machines are coming soon with the Liber Mechanicum and they are ready to make war in the Horus Heresy.
Thanks to the Horus Heresy Roadmap we know that the Liber Mechanicum book is coming out in August. And while that might feel like a long time away, time has a funny way of sneaking up on you. In anycase, this book is promising some powerful robotic allies for your Horus Heresy Era armies. Today, we’re getting a taste of what they can do.
“This book is similar to the Liber Astartes and Liber Hereticus, but laser-focused on the massive range of units available to the Mechanicum – the Priesthood of Mars that’s responsible for producing the massive shipments of weapons, tanks, and other war materiel needed to keep the Great Crusade running.”

First up, we get a look at the Table of Contents. While it might not be as extensive as the Space Marines it’s not exactly tiny either. You’ll be able to build your own Mechanicum Army with this book or you’ll be able to supplement a Space Marine force with allies from it. Either way, the Mechanicum will have some unique units to bring to the tabletop.
The Mechanicum also has its own batch of special rules to bring to the mix as well. For starters: Warlord Traits. One example is The Logic of Victory.
This Warlord Trait provides some interesting options if your Warlord doesn’t make a shooting attack or been locked in combat. The extra reactions combined with extra stats can make this a tempting option to pursue. There is certainly a trade off there but it could certainly be worth it.
Speaking of reactions, the Mechanicum also has their own Advanced Reactions as well. Scornful Fire basically allows you to unload into the enemy out of sequence.
If my understanding of this rule is correct then you may want to avoid shooting at Independent Characters of the Mechanicum or you’ll face the wrath of every other unit within 12″ of them. Ouch.
There’s so much more in the book. Along with all those units and rules you’ll also have some really nice “lore, illustrations, and photographs of the amazing miniatures in the Mechanicum range.” If you’re a Mechanicum fan then this is a must buy for you.
Even if you’re on the fence about the Mechanicum just remember they fought on both sides in the Heresy. So if there is a particular unit or model you’re drawn to, then you can likely use it with your Space Marines as allies.
The Liber Mechanicum is slated for release in August. That’s plenty of time to get your models ready for the tabletop!
