HBO’s most in-demand show has finally been renewed for a second season – ‘Our Flag Means Death’ will be back on the high seas.

On the first day of Pride month, HBO Max announced the the laugh-out-loud romantic pirate comedy will be returning for another season. It’s a good thing, too! Fans have been flooding the streaming service with inquiries, fan art, and other expressions of full-throttle enthusiasm for the Gentlemen Pirate and his crew of lovable misfits.

Our Flag Means Death

Our Flag Means Death is loosely based on the true story of an 18th century pirate named Stede Bonnet. The wealthy Barbados landowner left behind his family and privileged life to become a pirate. Despite being pretty bad at pirating, he became friends with the notorious Blackbeard Edward Teach. To be clear, the show certainly takes creative liberties when characterizing its subjects. That having been said, the show unfolded itself into a gloriously unique comedy and a heartwarming romance to boot.

Fans Demand OFMD‘s Renewal

As Pride month crept ever closer with no news of the show’s renewal, fans began to speculate that HBO would time the announcement with the upcoming holiday. After all, Stede and Blackbeards crews and friends all had their own charming stories to tell, too – and several of those stories centered around a colorful cast of queer darlings.

And sure, fans suspected the announcement was on hold for a reason. But that didn’t stop them from delivering HBO a daily outpouring of support for the show. One fan account on Twitter was created solely for the purpose of giving daily updates about the show’s second season. After all, season 1 left our romantic leads and Stede’s crew in the middle of an ocean of narrative possibility. And also in the middle of a literal ocean.

Cast & Crew React and Celebrate

Of course, the fanbase has also been sharing their gratitude for all of the actors and creators who brought the show to life. Showrunner David Jenkins and several of the crew members took to Twitter today to celebrate with fans and share their reactions.

Meanwhile, the show centers around Stede Bonnet, who’s expertly (and fashionably) played by Rhys Darby. And because he’s the most darling little blueberry muffin you’ll find on the internet, his honest reaction was pretty adorable.

Nathan Foad, who undoubtedly delivers some of the best facial expressions and one-liners, simply relied on one of Lucius’ best lines to respond. Of course, it kind of maked us wonder if the cast and crew knew about it before today.

Thankfully, Vico Ortiz, who plays the breakout non-binary icon Jim, let us know that the wait for the official announcement was kinda difficult for them as well. We’re very glad they were able to comfort themselves with the offerings of science TikTok.
